Smartboard, The Theater, & Crafts, Crafts, Crafts!!!

Christmas Party this Week

Parents,

I just wanted to assure you that your child's safety and well being is always my greatest priority.  As a mom, this weekend I hugged my kids a little tighter and spent a lot less time sweating the small stuff.  I am having a hard time wrapping my 39 year old mind around the events that took place in Conneticut.  I honestly don't see how a 7 or 8 year old could process any of it.  That being said, I feel like it is your decision as to how much your child does or does not know about what happened.  I do not plan on addressing this with the class.  If I have individual kids that know about it and want to talk about it, I will be glad to talk to them privately.
I plan on loving your child and making our room a happy, safe place for learning to take place.  We have a very busy, fun week ahead of us.  Please email me with any questions or concerns you may have.  Thank you for always supporting our classroom.

shifting gears.... :)

Please don't forget to send in the item that you signed up to bring for the Christmas party this Thursday.  Our party is going to start closer to 1:45 because the kids are with Mr. Darby until then.  Please feel free to join us.  Thank you all so much for helping to make this a great time for the kids.  Also a huge thank you to our room moms for all of their hard work.  Thanks a ton Mrs. Scafe and Mrs. Carney!!!

We are in great need of anti-bacterial wipes for our classroom.  We are completely out, and this is not the time to be without! It wouldbe great if everybody could bring in one each.  You would be surprised how often we use these, especially during flu season.

Story this week: Rosa and Blanca
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Phonics: Long i: i, ie, igh, y
Comprehension Skill: Theme and Plot

Math: We will continue with chapter 5 and regrouping.  Please make sure your child is practicing regrouping at home.  The kids have been doing a great job with it! This skill is extremely important for them to understand completely.

Have a super week!

We're going to the Theather!

This Tuesday is our Field Trip Day! We will be leaving the school around 9:00 and returning around 12:30.  We will eat a late lunch once we return.  We are going to dress up for the play.  Please remember that the guidelines for dress need to be similar to picture day, no spaghetti straps for the girls, etc.  The kids are so excited about going to a "fancy" place in their nice clothes.  We have also been discussing our very best manners.  You may want to also remind your child to be on their best behavior.  We have been reading the story and discussing it as we read.  We are going to finish it tomorrow.  Several of the kids are already familiar with it, so we have been having some very good discussions.  Please email me if you have any other questions.

A great big thank-you to Mrs. Scafe and Mrs. Carney for all of the work they have done for the Christmas party.  Your child brought home a red sheet with information about it last week.

Also a great big thank-you to Mrs. Denton and Mrs. Andrews for taking the class to lunch on teacher treat day.  I appreciate this so much!

Story: Anansi Goes Fishing
Genre: Folk Tales
Phonics: Compound Words
Comprehension Strategy: Cause and Effect
Comprehension Strategy: Monitor and Fix Up

In Math we are starting on subtraction in Chapter 5.  Please practice this at home with your child at night.  We will begin borrowing this week.  The saying you are going to hear your child say often is "Bigger Bottom Better Borrow!"  This is the question we ask when looking to see if we need to borrow.  This skill is so important, so please review with your child.  Remember that they will have their lesson sheets on the keep at home side in their binders.

Have a super week!

Big Hearts In Room 124!

Wow! We had an incredibly busy academic week and ended it on Friday by making Christmas cards for injured soliders.  We definitely love and appreciate our military and their families.  The kids put so much love and creativity into the cards, and had a blast making them.  A great big thank you to Mrs. Carney for heading this up for us, and mailing the cards.

Christmas crafting will be in full swing this week and I have two of the strangest request you have probably ever heard.  You will just have to trust me! ;)
We are going to need about a cup of white sand.  I am hoping that one of you has a sandbox that stays covered and some sand you could share.  We are going to mix it with glue for one of our projects.
Next request is that I need a piece of bread for each child.  We have 24 kids and we could use a few extra just in case we have a mess up.  It doesn't matter if it is white or wheat.
THANKS A TON!

VERY IMPORTANT! We will have our last math test for the nine weeks this Tuesday on Chapter 4.  We will still have several daily grades in Math, but this is the last test grade for the nine weeks.  It is so important that you go over the review homework with your child Monday night to make sure they are ready for the test.  I also wanted to remind you that your child should have the daily lessons from their book that we do in class in their binder daily.  If you need to review the lesson with your child, they are there.  Otherwise feel free to throw them away.  I know their binders fill up quickly.  Also, don't forget to keep an eye on grades in Inow.  As a parent, I prefer to see grades right away instead of seeing two weeks worth in signed papers.  I don't like any surprises when it comes to my kids and their grades.  You are probably the same way.

I also wanted to give you a heads up that we will have a timed math drill that will count as a test grade in January.  Your child has been taking timed math drill test often, but they have not counted as a grade.  This has just been practice for them.  I cannot stress to you enough how important it is for your child to have their math facts down quickly.  When we play math games in the room I do not let them count on their fingers. Please also have them practice with Math Facts in a Flash at home.  They can't pass the levels at home, but they can practice.  We have been working on Math Facts in a flash in the room as well.  The kids are very antsy for the Math Store to open.  We will have some very happy shoppers once it does!

I also have to BRAG HUGE on our classroom full of amazing readers! The kids have been reading up a storm and doing an amazing job with AR.  Your child deserves a pat on the back for a job well done.  It is a good problem for a teacher to have when I have to ask the kids to put their books down when they are walking in the hallway.  I also see a lot of sad faces when I tell the kids that they can' t take their library books to the lunchroom because we don't want them to be near food or drinks.  And yes, they even ask to take their books when we go outside to recess.  Room 124 LOVES to read and it shows!! If your child has informed you that our class won the Aviator, that means that we had the highest points and comprehension for 2nd grade with AR.  They announce it during morning announcements and the kids go wild! We have been winning it every week now for several weeks.  I don't think they plan on sharing it with any other 2nd grade classes either, but we'll see.  :)

Story this Week: Dear Juno
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Phonics: Long o: o, oa, ow
Comp. Skill: Draw Conclusions
Comp. Strategy: Visualize
Grammar: Verbs with singular and plural nouns

If at any time you would like to sit down and discuss your child, just send me an email and we will set up a time.  I am always available for conferences.

Have a super week!!

Busy Week Ahead!

I hope everybody has had a fantastic Thanksgiving with your families!

If you haven't returned your permission slip and/or money for the field trip to ASF please get them both in right away.

This Wednesday we will have a Science Voc. test.  Your child copied down the vocabulary words and has them in their binder.  The copier wasn't working so we copied them down.

We will be continuing with Chapter 4 in Math.  We will have a mid-chapter grade this week.  Please work on regrouping with your child at home.  This is an extremely important skill your child needs to grasp.

We are starting Unit 3 this week in Reading.  Your child has the new list of spelling words for Unit 3.  This week will be Unit 3 Week 1.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Holidays are November 21 - 23.

Forms asking for help for Teacher Treat Day came home last week - second and third grade parents are asked to help with this one.

Several Scholastic Book Orders came home last week.  You are welcome to place the orders online or you can send them in by this Tuesday.  If you are ordering any Christmas secrets please email me so I will know to put them aside for you.

Please don't forget to send in the field trip information.

We started our presentations on our State boxes Friday.  However, due to the fact that we have a classroom full of world changers, the presentations are running a little long.  :)  I am hoping that we will finish them tomorrow.  I will post a slide show of the boxes once we are done.  The kids are doing an incredible job.  They even incorporated the use of the Elmo into the presentations on Friday.

We will not begin the new unit in Reading or have Spelling words this week due to the 2-day week.

Your child will only have Math homework Monday night.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.  I am so thankful for each child in Room 124.  I am also thankful for their incredibly supportive parents!

Happy Veteran's Day!

We have so many military famlies in our class and I wanted to give you all a great big thank you for your service! What a tremendous sacrifice you and your family give for our great Country.  THANK YOU!!! We honor you today.

Field Trip Information came home with your child Friday.  We are only allowed 2 parents per class.  The only fair way to do it, that I can think of, is to take the first two field trip forms and money that are in my mailbox Tuesday morning.  I so wish we could all go, but ASF is limited on their seats and they want to have as many as they can for students.

We will have Nancy's Italian Ice this Tuesday.

We need coffee filters for a Thanksgiving craft this week.

Your child should have come home with a book from the library on the state they are doing their State Project on.  Remember the projects are due this Friday, November 16th.  Please follow the rubric that is on the sheet that came home.  This is how your child will receive their points for their project.  Mrs. Doherty said that Michael's was out of the shoe box size box when she went.  However, a few doors down from Michael's the shoe store was happy to share their boxes for free.

This week is a review week and Benchmark testing in Reading.  We will not have a spelling test or a new whole group story to test on.  We will take our Benchmark test for Unit 2 in Reading.
Please check with your child on their marker supply at school.  We have several students that are without markers already.  I have suggested to the kids that they should take a Sharpie at home and write their initials on each marker.  We end up with many markers on our floor each day, and nobody claims them.  If the markers have intials on them we can get them back to the right owner easily.

A great big thank you to Julia's mom for taking the class to lunch this past Friday.  It was such a nice treat to have a duty free lunch with the other 2nd grade teachers.  Thank you!!

Remember that we are collecting items for the Human Society as a school.  A green slip of paper came home with specific items they are asking for.  The kids can put the donations by the front office as they walk in the school.

Have a super week! Email me with any questions.

Grade Level shirts!

We have a lot going on this week.  Please note the following:

The previously scheduled PTA meeting for Monday, Nov. 5 has been cancelled

A sheet came home Friday letting you know about our grade level t-shirts.  Each grade has a different day to bring in the money for the shirt so please make note of it.  2nd grade is to bring in their order form and money this Wednesday, November 7th ONLY.  Please order carefully because they can't do any exchanges or refunds.  You may make a check out to Blount or send in $12 cash.  I won't be able to make change.  The kids will wear these shirts every Tuesday.  We will also wear them when we go on field trips for the rest of the school year.

Remember that we will dismiss early this Friday at 1:10.  Then we will also be out of school Monday, November 12th for Veteran's Day.

Class Pictures came home last week.  Please return those if you are planning on purchasing them.

State Project assignments came home last week.  Last year when my son did this project, we purchased a white box from Michael's that was in the exact shape of a shoe box.  This will cut out a little work if you would like a little short cut.  :)  I wouldn't be surprised if Hobby Lobby has them as well, but I haven't looked for them there.

Please do not forget that if your child is absent from school I have to have a sickness related excuse to send to the office in order for it to be excused.

Reminder about money that comes in:  Lunch money and snack/juice money go to two separate places.  This money has to be sent in separately and in separate envelopes.  It does not go to the same account.  Nancy's money also has to be sent in separately. It would also be very helpful if your child's lunch money has their name and lunch account written on it.  Thanks for your help.

I have a new web site to share with you for learning Math Facts.  I was told about it as my son was learning multiplication facts in 3rd grade.  It also has addition and subtraction that would be excellent practice for your child, along with Math Facts in a Flash.  I added the site to our list of sites on the right side of our blog.  It's called Oswego Math.  Have your child check it out.

New Nine Weeks!

We had such a fun and busy week last week.  I will add some slideshows to share the fun.  We have another fun and busy week of learning coming up this week.

*  Very important! Downtown has issued a change for our Spelling grades.  From now on your child will have two spelling daily grades under Grammar in STI for each nine weeks.  Those two grades will consist of all of the spelling Test for each Unit averaged together to make one grade.  This will be an average of about 4 or 5 spelling test for each Unit.  I will hold those spelling test in my grade book and average them together once the Unit is over.  You will get all of those test stapled together in signed papers once we have completed that Unit.

* The Book Fair will continue this week Until Thursday, November 1st.  If your child brings money, they will be sent to shop.  You may want to specify with them specific items you want them to purchase with their money.  My own children both came home with "slime" that I don't care for.  I should have been more specific in my shopping directions for them.  :)  I wanted to make sure you knew there are items other than books that may be purchased.

November 1st is the last day for the Just Give Campaign.
* November 9th is an early release day for students.  I am sure you have all received the recording about this, but please let me know if you have any questions.  Blount will dismiss at 1:10 that day.

November 12th is a school Holiday for Veteran's Day.

I realize that this Wednesday evening may be a big night for the kids so we will go ahead and test on Chapter 3 in Math this Wednesday to avoid the homework Wednesday night.  We will also have a Science Vocabulary test for Chapter 3 this Wednesday.  Your child brought a study sheet home last week for these words.  We will not have any homework Wednesday night.

Story: The Bremen Town Musicians
Phonics: Plurals
Comprehension Skill: Author's Purpose
Comprehension Strategy: Story Structure

Please don't forget to sign up for STI so you can see your child's grades earlier than signed papers if you need to.

Busy Week Ahead!

We are celebrating Red Ribbon Week this week at Blount.  Your child brought home a paper this past Friday telling you everything we are doing during the week.

The Book Fair is coming!  We are scheduled for a preview day this Thursday and then shopping will begin this Friday.  It will continue until Thursday, November 1st.  Your child brought home a brochure telling you about it last week.  This year they aren't able to take credit cards from parents, they will only be accepting cash or checks.  I can send your child each day they have money at designated times to shop.

Our Field Trip to The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History is this Thursday.  I am so sad that I have 8 parents that want to go, but we can only have 2 from each class.  To be fair, I took the first two forms that were in my mailbox and they were from Coco and Jordan.  I will email you moms more specifics.

We are going to be cooking pumpkin seeds this Friday if any of you would like to join us for that.  We have plenty of room for you in our classroom! Please email me if you want to join us Friday.  I would love for one of you to carve a -2nd- into our pumpkin for us, if you have this talent that I am lacking!

We finished the first nine weeks this past Friday.  Your child will receive their report card at dismissal this Thursday.  We are starting the new nine weeks tomorrow.

What an amazing time we had at the Fall Festival! I know the PTA is so appreciative of everything you did to contribute to this great night.  I would love to give a great big thank-you to Kathleen's mom for heading up such a perfect night! I heard about it all day Friday.  I would say a good time was had by all.

Second Grade Super Stars!

I sure do love
hese faces, serious and silly!

Wrapping up our first nine weeks

Our First nine weeks will end this Friday.  Report cards will not come home until October 25th.  Please make sure you are checking STI if you want to see your child's progress sooner than when signed papers come home every other week.

The kids are so excited about the Blount Fall Festival this week.  If you ordered the wristbands ahead of time, please look for them to come home in your child's binder in an envelope if you haven't already received them.  Also, if you are able to volunteer at the Fall Festival or contribute items, please don't forget to send those in as well.  I know we have some pretty incredible parents from our classroom that are working very hard to make the Fall Festival a super night of fun for everybody! You are greatly appreciated! I see a homework free night for Thursday in our future as well.  Happy Fall!

Reminder: Juice and/or snack money has to be turned in on Monday unless your child is absent.  If your child is absent on a Monday the office will accept it that Tuesday.  This money doesn't go to the same account that lunch money goes to so make sure you send it separately.  I have to have a check or exact change to turn into the office.

This teacher is incredibly proud to say that we had every single student score a 100 on the Science Vocabulary test last week!! I am so proud!

Author Visit, Dirt Babies, Readers Theater, & Walking to School Blount Style

Happy Fall!

I wanted to give a great big thank-you to Mrs. Scafe for making our class directories.  Your child brought one home last week.  If you have any changes or corrections please send me an email so I can let her know.  Thank you Mrs. Scafe!!

Also, thanks to Mrs. Carney for combining our emails for me! I sent a test email Saturday night.  Please respond to that email so I will know you received it.  If you didn't receive an email from me, please let me know.  This will be a much quicker way to communicate during the week if I haven't touched base with you about something on our blog.  Thank you Mrs. Carney!!

Teacher Treat Day was Wonderful! We absolutely have the most amazing PTA! Thank you Mrs. Scafe, Mrs. Carney, Mrs. Foley, and Mrs. Bailey for taking the kids to lunch.

Your child has been bringing home a very large amount of paperwork over the last couple of weeks.  Please make sure you are checking their binders nightly so you don't miss any important information that may be coming home.  I have also been asking the kids to be responsible with making sure you see the information at night.  For example, a Science study guide came home last week for a test this Thursday.  It is very important that your child studies the vocabulary words a little bit each night.

School pictures are this Thursday.  Your child doesn't have to wear their uniform, but they still have to follow school guidelines on the dress code.

We will be creating very large skeletons this week which will require A LOT of white paper plates and brads.  If you are able to send in either of these supplies please do so by Wednesday.  We will be making them Thursday and Friday this week.

Your child has a new sheet of Spelling Words for Unit 2 in their binder.  We will begin with the Unit 2 Week 1 words this week.

Story this Week: Tara and Tiree
Genre: Narrative Nonfiction
Phonics: r-Controlled ar, or, ore
Comprehension Skill: Sequence
Comprehension Strategy: Predict
Grammar: Nouns

We will have a Math test this Tuesday.  I am sorry about the delays last week, but we needed more time on the chapter.  Please look for the review sheet to come home this Monday.

We will have a Science Vocabulary Test this Thursday.  Your child received a study guide for it last week.

Remember to check STI if you need to keep a close eye on your child's grades before you see signed papers.

Have a super week!

Unit Review Week

Remember that this week is the end of Unit 1 so we will not have a spelling test this week.  Your child will receive a new Unit 2 Spelling list in their binder by the end of this week.  We will have a Unit 1 Test this week that will be a review of all the skills we have learned in Reading and Grammar so far.

Your child brought home a Social Studies activity for a Community Project in their binder last week.  It has your child's assigned place on it.

Information about the Fall Festival and the wrist bands and t-shirts also came home last week.

If you are planning on joining us for any of the field trips this year please make sure you turn in the background check form that came home at the beginning of the school year.  We are hoping to get our first field trip to Lanark finalized soon.

We will have a Math Test on Chapter 2 Thursday.  Make sure your child is comfortable with the review sheet that will come home Wednesday for homework.

Please email me with any questions you may have.  Have a super week!

Class Pet

I am sure you have heard that our class fish Blue Bell is no longer with us.  If one of you would like to pick out a new Beta Fish for us to have as a pet please let me know.  Your child may name the fish for us.  We have the fish tank clean and ready.

I need your help with two very important things.  The first thing is regarding check outs during the day.  If at all possible, please schedule appointments as late in the day as you can.  I know sometimes we have to take the time we are given, but if you have a choice please make it as late as you can.  It really hurts your child to miss Math in the afternoon.  If you can schedule at 2:00 or later that would be very helpful.  The other thing I need your help with is conduct.  If your child brings home a conduct sheet I really need your help at home with enforcing the importance of following the classroom rules.  We are a very social class, and we are learning the correct time to talk during our school day.  If your child is talking during instruction it is going to hinder them from learning, along with their classmates.  I have given much grace and reminders regarding this, but we have been in school now long enough to understand the correct time to visit.  I am also in the middle of making some changes to our seating arrangements in the room.  I am going to do everything possible to create the best learning environment for your child.  Thank you so much for your help with both of these things.

Your child brought home a very important piece of paper this past Thursday.  It gives you information on how to check on your child's AR progress as well as Math Facts info.  As a parent, I absolutely love to receive emails telling me that my child took an AR test and what they made on it.  This is a great way to stay updated on your child's progress with AR.  I have been very pleased at how well we are doing in the classroom.  If you feel like you need to read and quiz your child on their library book before they test just send me an email and let me know you would like to send a post it on the book before they test on it.  Please remind your child to bring their library books back to school every day.
I can't seem to give the kids enough time to work on Math Facts in a Flash.  I have a feeling that the Math Store has a lot to do with their motivation, but I am impressed regardless.  I wanted you to know that I do set up a schedule to make sure that every child gets on Math Facts when we do it as a class.  I wish we had more time and computers to do it more often.  Remember that your child can practice at home, but can't do the actual testing unless they are at school.
If your child didn't bring in a yellow folder at the beginning of the year, they need one.  We keep important information and passwords for testing in this folder.  The kids also take the folder with them each time they go to the library.

I will be out of the classroom this Friday to attend a conference in Birmingham.  Mrs. Pinel with be with the kids.  She has been working at Blount for many years and she knows exactly how we do things in Room 124.  Your child will be in very good hands.

Our Dirt Babies are growing like wild so you may see them this week.  If they do come home, your child will have directions on dressing the dirt baby, giving it a hair cut, and bringing it back in to share the next week.  We'll see how they look around the middle of the week.  Don't forget to "wash" their hair in water if they do come home.  We don't want any hair to turn brown.

We are going to be learning about our community in Social Studies.  Your child is going to bring home an assignment to take a picture and document one place in our community.  We will be putting all of our places together to make a class book.

Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.  Have a super week!

Dirt Babies

Put On your Seatbelts...

We have a very busy academic week ahead of us.

I have a great big thank-you to give to the moms of Ethan, James, and Reagan! These amazing ladies came in and helped each child make their own dirt baby last week.  I will post a slideshow of our fun time together.  I am sure you have all heard all about your child's dirty baby.  My favorite quote from that day happened when when we were watering them good before putting them in the window to get some sun.  When I handed a child her dirt baby, she leaned over and kissed the top of the dirt head and said, "I love you my dirt child!"  Oh, how I love spending my day with your precious children!  :)
I want to give you a heads-up that once the dirt babies grow a lot of "hair" they will come home with your child to be dressed up as anything your child would like.  Then they will bring them back to share with the class.

The JUST GIVE campaign is going great.  I wanted to make sure you understand that the money doesn't have to be turned in until November 1st.  The only thing your child needs to turn in right now is the sheet saying whether or not your child will be bringing in money.  The money is based on donations, and all of the money will go toward the school.  Even if your child isn't bringing in money, they still need to return the sheet.  If we were doing fund raisers Blount would only receive a small percentange.  Hopefully this campaign will replace fund raisers for us this year.  I know as a parent, I love this idea! Your child may ask grandparents or anybody else that may be interested in helping our school.

I will be sending home several Scholastic book orders Monday.  If you want to order, they are due by this Friday, September 21st.  I will also include a letter letting you know how to order online if you would like.  If you are more comfortable filling out the forms and sending them in, that is fine also.  Please remember that you only have to send in one check to Scholastic even if you order from several different ones.  I will place the order Friday afternoon so please don't send any in after Friday.  Also, only send a check to Scholastic.  I can't mail them cash.

I know some of you are still waiting on Spirit Wear and books from the author visit.  I will get those to your child as soon as they are given to me.  I believe we are waiting on an order to come in for more Spirit Wear.  They are very quick about getting those passed out once they have them.

Your child will bring home a Science Vocabulary study guide Monday.  Please have them review it for a test Tuesday.  We will play a big review game Monday that will have them very familiar with these vocabulary words.  Please review the words with your child Monday night to make sure they are prepared.  There are only 8 words, and these are already very familiar to them.

If our schedule goes as planned, we will be ready to test on Chapter 1 in Math this Wednesday.  Your child will bring home a review sheet for homework Tuesday night.  Please make sure he or she is very comfortable with it in order to be prepared for the test.

Our Social Studies map test will be this Friday.  This test will be on the 7 continents and 4 bodies of water.  Your child brought home a study guide map to prepare for this test a while back.

Shew, I told you we have a busy week! :)

Getting Acquainted

Fall is in the Air!

Wow! I sure do hope everybody has enjoyed this beautiful day with your family.

We have a busy week coming up in Room 124.
Please don't forget about our first PTA General Membership Meeting this Tuesday at 6:00.  I will give your child a homework free evening to make it easier for you to be there.  The PTA will also have Carraba's there with dinner for only $6.00 a plate.  They have made it super easy for us to all be there.  Your child brought home a yellow sheet with the menu, and it sounds delicious! I hope to see you all there.  Also, be on the lookout for information to come home about our Just Give campaign.  We attended a Pep Rally Friday afternoon so I feel pretty sure that your child had a lot to tell you about it.  Our PTA goes above and beyond to do everything they possibly can to help make our children and our school the best.

I would love to have some help from two parents this Thursday at 10:30 for an hour.  We are going to make our dirty babies.  We will be going to lunch right after that if you would like to help and then eat lunch with your child.  Speaking of lunch, you are ALWAYS welcome to come and join your child for lunch.  Our lunch time is 11:25.  A great big thank-you to the Fallesen family for providing our soil.  Get ready parents, you are going to hear a whole lot about your child's "baby"!

Your child brought home a map with the 7 Continents and 4 bodies of water this past Friday.  We will test on them the week of September 17th.  They are only responsible for knowing where they go on the map.  They do not need to know how to spell the words.  The words will be provided for them.

We are going to start working into our reading groups this week.  We learned about our literacy stations last week and practiced with each one.

Your child does not have their ZPD reading range yet.  We had half of our class that had to go and retake the STAR test Friday.  There was a problem with the program when they tested in the lab with Mrs. Brand the first time, so she had them retake it.  Hopefully we will have those ranges this week.

Please don't forget to label money when you send it in.  If you are sending lunch money it would be very helpful to have your child's lunch number and name on it.

Gearing up for a SUPER week in 2nd Grade!!

Monday, September 3, 2012

Happy Labor Day!

I appreciate you all taking time out of your very busy lives to come to the cluster conferences last week.  I love to do those right away so we are all on the same page with 2nd grade.

I want to clarify something that I believe I told one of my groups incorrectly regarding the pre-test for Spelling.  When we have a Holiday on a Monday we will take the pre-test that Tuesday.  So tomorrow we will take a pre-test on our spelling words.  If your child is sick on a Monday they will just wait until that Friday to take their spelling test.

If I sent any missing forms home with your child last week, please send those back as soon as possible so I can get them turned into the office.  Also, please send in the Time for Kids and Scholastic checks as soon as you can.  I would love to get all of that taken care of this week.  Thank you.

I sent home a Parent Letter with your child Friday that tells you how to access your child's Pearson Success account for our Reading test.  I am so happy to tell you that we took our Reading test Friday and all keyed in our answers on the computer successfully.  I will continue to monitor the kids as they do this until they are all comfortable with it.  I was very pleased with the grades for our first test.  I will be putting in a baseline test that the kids took the first week of school for Reading.  I want you to know that this is just a baseline assessment to see where your child is at the beginning of the year.  It is not a grade that is counted against them.

We started sharing our -About Me- posters Friday and we will finish sharing them Tuesday.  The kids are doing an excellent job presenting them to the class, and we have all enjoyed getting to know each other better.

Your child will receive a study guide for learning the seven continents and four bodies of water this week.  They do not need to learn how to spell them, they just need to recognize them and know where they go on the map.  We will work on these for a while before testing.  I just wanted you to have a heads-up.

Please don't forget to look for homework to come home tomorrow written down in your child's binder for the whole week.

We have a science project coming up that will require a large amount of potting soil.  If any of you would like to send a large bag in please shoot me an email.  I already have the other items.  Thank you!

Your child will take the STAR assessment this week in order to get their reading range for their library books.  Once we know their ZPD they may check out books on their level and take AR test on them.  You will receive a print out letting you know how your child did on the STAR assessment.

Great Start!

Hello Parents!

What an incredibly productive and BUSY week we have had.  We have been getting to know each other, along with all of the new things that go with 2nd grade.  On top of this we had a very large baseline test in Reading and Math.  I assured the kids these were just to see what they already know.  They handled both of them very well.

Remember this week we are having our cluster conferences.  I am a little concerned about the weather situation, especially on Wednesday.  Several of you are signed up for the Wednesday slots.  If any of you would like to go ahead and come Tuesday to the 4:00 or 4:30 please feel free to.
If you have not signed up for a time yet, please email me so we can get you signed up.

*  Every student has a new lunch number this year.  Your child has that number written down so please help them learn it quickly.  They will also use this number with AR testing.

*  ALL ABOUT ME PROJECTS ARE DUE AUGUST 31ST.  Refer to the sheet that was in the packet at Meet the Teacher Night.  If you are in need of another one, please send me an email.  I know an unbelievable amount of paperwork came home last week.

*  If a form was missing from your child's packet I just made a copy and sent it home in your child's binder Friday.  Please sign it and return it Monday so I can get that paperwork taken care of.  Thank you!

*  If you haven't sent in the check for Scholastic and Time please get those in as soon as possible so I can mail those off.

*  Our lunch time is 11:25 this year.  Please feel free to join your child for lunch.  You may want to walk on down and wait by the bench in the lobby outside the cafeteria doors.  This year The Superintendant has required that we take a 10 minute walk before lunch every day.  We have been doing this at various places in order to figure out the best way to avoid wasting any instruction time.  I believe the black top in the back of the school is going to work best for us.  As of right now, we are leaving there and going straight into the lunchroom.

*  If I have a Dad or Mom that enjoys using power tools and you would like to make holes in a large amount of tennis balls for us, please let me know.  Jordan was so kind to bring in several balls for us.  We added several desk to our room and they don't have balls on them yet.

* Your child is going to write down homework for the week every Monday.  Just in case it is lost or forgotten, I will always have it posted on new.schoolnotes.com.  I know this is a big responsibility, so I always have this backup if it's needed.  I also put the spelling words on there for the week.

*  We will do a practice pre-test on our spelling words this Monday.  Your child got a spelling list of all of Unit 1 spelling words.  Their spelling words for this week are in the first column.  We will practice the correct way to take the spelling test tomorrow.  From now on, if your child makes a 100 on the Monday pre-test, they will not have to take the test on Friday and they will be excused from cetain spelling homework.  We will discuss this more in the cluster conferences this week.  If by chance your child makes a 100 tomorrow, the same rule will apply.

DON'T FORGET NANCY'S ITALIAN ICE MAY BE BOUGHT TOMORROW AND EVERY MONDAY FOR $1.00.

Our home computer decided to quite on us this week and we are in the process of replacing it.  I will post pictures from our first week as soon as we are back in business with a new computer.

Welcome to a great year in 2nd Grade!

It was so much fun meeting all of the new faces that are going to make up our classroom family this year.  Thank you so much for coming.  I am so excited about our new year together.

Please make sure you return the transportation sheet that was in your child's folder on Monday.  I want to make sure that we all get home the correct way without any problems.  If your child's transportation is different for the first day only just make a note of that on the sheet for me.  Thank you.

Feel free to email me with any questions you may have.

I can't wait to see those sweet faces Monday morning!

AWESOME YEAR!

Just a few things as we wind down our last week of 2nd grade!

We have drawn new self portraits of ourselves at the end of 2nd grade.  We got our time capsules out from the beginning of the year and have had so much fun comparing how different we look at the end of the year.  I'll add a slideshow this week of all of our pictures.  Due to the ugly sick bug that has been visiting our room, we haven't all been able to share yet.

If you signed up to bring in an item to help us celebrate 2nd grade this week, please don't forget to send it in tomorrow.  Also, if your child has a fun board game they would like to share with the class they may bring it in this Wednesday.  Please keep in mind that games with a lot of pieces need to be secured so the pieces aren't lost.  We will come back home with the game that Wednesday afternoon.

Your child will be bringing home a lot of items this week.  We will spread out things so they won't have too much to carry at a time.  Please be aware that your child has some pretty important treasures in their writing journal that they will want to keep and share with you.  I had a parent last year that had to "find" their child's writing journal in a large trash can after the backpack was cleaned out.  I do not want this to happen to any of you!

I sent home Dibels results early.  If you sent it back signed, you get a gold star, and I will send it right back home to you in your child's report card this week.  :)  I was so excited for you to see such amazing results, I sent it too quickly!

For families that are moving, I will be sending home your child's purple reading folder.

                                                              MUCH, MUCH LOVE!

Busy Week!

Honor's Day Program Thursday, May 31st at 9:30 in the Cafeteria.

Be on the look-out for a note to come home this week letting you know about a few items we will be needing to celebrate our last week of 2nd Grade.  Let me know on the sheet if there is an item you can send in.

Look for Dibels results to come home with your child this week.  I am so incredibly proud of the progress your child has made this year.  I am blown away at the phenominal readers in Room 124!

For homework this week your child will have 2 math review pages from their workbook on Tuesday.  They have until Friday to turn those 2 sheets in.

I will be out of the classroom this Friday to celebrate my daughter's kindergarten program with her.  Your child will be in very good hands with Mrs. Best on that day.

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Have a super week!

Butterflies!

Super Busy Week!

Your child has a study guide for Science on the parts of a Chrysalis. They will have a word bank. The test is this Friday.

Our Field Trip to the Museum is this Tuesday, May 22nd.  Please have your child wear their yellow 2nd grade shirt.  We are scheduled to leave the school at 9:00 that morning.  We will be picnicing around 12:00.  There is not much shade there, so remember sunscreen if you feel like your child will need it.  Email me if you have any questions.  We could use one more cooler if I have a parent going that is able to bring one.

We will be doing our last Dibels testing this Wednesday.  I am on the Dibels team so I will be out of the classroom tomorrow morning for 1st grade Dibels testing.  I will get the kids back from the other 2nd grade teachers as soon as we are finished testing for the day.

Please make sure your child has money in their lunch account if they are buying lunch.  Your child will bring home a slip letting you know if they are low.  If your child doesn't have money the lunchroom staff will make them a cheese sandwich.

All Library Books need to be turned back into the library.

This week is our Review week in Reading.  We will be reviewing and taking the unit test toward the end of the week.  We will not be testing on anymore spelling words this year.

In Math we will begin Chapter 22 on Measurement.

School Holiday May 28th for Memorial Day.

Please email me with any questions or concerns.

Big News!!

Somebody got a new smile!!! We all LOVE it Amir!

Parents,

If your child has braces in his or her future, they have officially been blessed in Room 124! Thank you Amir!

Just in Case you haven't heard ....

THE CATERPILLARS ARE HERE!!!!!

I get to hear so many great quotes every day in our classroom.  However, I heard one quote on Friday that sums up how I think everybody was feeling.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!  As a student was picking out his special caterpillar to put in his container, he lifted the container right up to his face and said, "Hey Little Buddy, I sure have been waiting on you to arrive for a long, long time! It sure is nice to finally meet you!"
We had just enough time to get our catepillars picked out and in our individual cups before Field Day.  On Monday we will begin the study of the life cycle of a butterfly.  I can guarantee you that you are going to hear more about your child's caterpillar over the next couple of weeks than probably anything else.  And yes, "frass" is a real word.  If you haven't heard it before, your child will fill you in.  :)

I thought you might enjoy one more sweet moment on another day in our classroom.  Our whole group reading story for the week was about our flag and the origination of it.  So we learned a lot about Patriotism and what it means as well.  We listened to a recording of Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner as the words were displayed so we could sing along.  Our story taught us about how this song came about with Francis Scott Key.  We all remembered singing it either at a ballgame or somewhere else, but we didn't know the story behind it, which made it even more special to us.  So toward the end of the week we decorated our own flag cake and as we were right in the middle of decorating, a student started singing very softly The Star Spangled Banner.  The next thing I knew, the whole class was singing while decorating, and others stopped decorating to salute the flag.  Honestly, for once, Mrs. Culp was speechless.  It was the sweetest thing I've ever seen.  Then we stopped because a debate broke out about what the correct words were to the song.  :)
Your kids amaze me daily.  I truly treasure each of them dearly! Thank you for molding them into who they are.  They make you proud!

On to other business...

Your child brought home a field trip form on Friday.

The Book Fair begins tomorrow.

If any of you have pictures from the Zoo you would like me to post on the blog, please email them to me.  Most of my pictures are of the kids that were in my group after lunch.  My, how we loved the bird house!

I wanted to make sure that you all knew that you can save any of the pictures that I post on our blog.  You may want to go back through the slideshows.

Field Day was a blast! Thank you Mrs. Bosch for providing us with water, we definitely needed it! Thank you Mrs. Chappell for providing us with a cold treat to cool off after it was over! We were HOT, HOT, HOT! Thank you Mrs. Cantey for having more energy than any child out there! You will never grow old!

This & That

Field Trip Forms Came home Thursday.

Please return them as soon as you can.  All parents are welcome on this field trip! There is plenty of room at the Zoo!

I have to give a great big thank-you to Amir's mom for sharpening a zillion pencils for us!! Thank you!! I know your hand is sore, but there are 18 very grateful 2nd graders that appreciate you! We have a new policy with pencils in room 124 that is working great so far!

Please remember to have a pack of new markers for your child this week.  In addition to the regular markers, if you would like to purchase a set of skinny markers your child will use them.  Please remember to have your child's name or initials on each marker so we can return markers that are on the floor to the rightful owner.

Spring Pictures came home last week.  Please don't forget to turn in your envelope if you are purchasing them.

SAT Testing is this week in grades 3-5.  Please make sure your child is at school on time.  We don't want to prevent the upper grades from starting on time with testing.  Testing can also affect our lunch time, so this week wouldn't be the best week to join us for lunch.

This week is a review week with the Unit test in Reading.  We do not have spelling words for this week.  Your child will have a new Unit Spelling list for next week.

In Math we will be learning about Plane Shapes in Chapter 18.
Please don't forget to go back and continue to work on telling time, money, math facts, regrouping, etc.  The kids need to continue practicing these skills over and over.  Our famous saying with regrouping is "BIGGER BOTTOM BETTER BORROW!"  Remind your child of this saying when you practice.

Don't forget to return your child's signed report card.  The other one is for you to keep.

Spirit Night this Wednesday, April 11th at Sarris' at the Station (beside Pike Road Library).  They will be donating 10% of ALL SALES that night to Blount! The time is 5:00 to 9:00.

Have a super week!

LITERATURE CIRCLES......

This is what the buzz is going to be about in Room 124!! I can't wait to teach the kids about Literature Circles! This is going to involve a lot of modeling and practicing, but the end result is going to be wonderful!

We will be celebrating SAT testing for 3-5 graders by wearing the following each day this week:

Monday –“Shine bright on testing”, wear sunglasses

Tuesday – “Hit a homerun on the test”, wear a baseball hat or visor

Wednesday – “Sock it to testing”, roll up your pants and wear crazy socks

Thursday – “Team Up for testing”, wear your blount shirt or other favorite team jersey

I am going to send home a reminder with your child this week, but I wanted to give you a heads up that each child needs a new pack of markers for their pencil box at their desk. We did a marker check the Friday before Spring Break and we are running very low. I would also encourage you to have your child write his or her intials or name on each marker. We are finding several markers on the floor at the end of the day. If the marker has an initial or name we can get it back to the right owner. I have also found that the kids LOVE writing with the skinny markers, especially during Journal time. So if you would like to get those as well, I know your child would love it. Ask your child about any other supplies they may be low on. I have been surprised at how markers have completely replaced crayons in our room.

Please don't forget that this Friday, April 6th we will be out of school for a weather day that we didn't need. Lets all cross our fingers that we have another perfect weather day!

Story: Signmaker's Assistant

Math: We will finish Chapter 17 - Probability - and test this week.  The test is tentative for Wednesday.  Please look for the Math Review sheet to come home that we have before each test.  We have had a lot of fun with this chapter.  It involved a lot of spinning, drawing, coloring, and shaking blocks in bags.

I can't wait to see my favorite 18 smiling faces in the morning! I have missed their sweet, sweet faces!

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Also, let me know if you would like to sit down for a conference at any time.
