A Great Big Thank-You to Pia's Mom for getting our class a new Pencil Sharpener! You saved the day, and we appreciate you!

Our Food Drive is going fantastic.  Our box is overflowing, just like we wanted it to.  Please continue to send items in.

We have been having too much fun in Science with Balancing and Weighing.  Every child enjoyed making mobiles Friday.  I will post a slideshow of their hard work.  I hope the mobiles make it home in one piece.  They are a little delicate.  We hung them in the room to enjoy, but they will come home this week.  We have many more fun activities to do with this Unit.

I am still hoping to have more parents volunteer to come in and share during our study on the Presidents next month.  We are so easy to please, I promise you can't go wrong with us!

Please email me with any questions or concerns, and have a SUPER week!

Food Drive begins Tuesday, January 22nd

Our 2nd and 3rd grade Community Spirit Project is a food drive for the Montgomery Area Food Bank.  We will begin collecting the food this Tuesday until Friday, February 1st.  Your child brought home a lime green flier with the details of what to bring in.  This is a great opportunity for us to teach the kids the importance of helping others.  We have a box in our room so we will be able to see just how much our class alone is contributing.  I hope our box overflows! A great big thank you to Mrs. Lancaster for heading this project up for 2nd and 3rd grade!

A great big thank you to Mrs. Fallesen and Mrs. Foley for taking the kids to lunch last week.  Also a great big thank you to Mrs. Carney for staying with the kids while I attended the PTA meeting last week.  I appreciate you all so much!

Thank you for all of the treasure box treats you have sent in! I was told that the box was getting a little low and boring.  :)  You have spruced it up for us, and turned up the competition even more for AR.

Please remember to send in field trip forms and money by this Wednesday, January 23rd for the play.  We are reading the book now so we will be well prepared.  The field trip will be February 21st.

Please check with your child on their school supplies.  Your child should have at least one glue stick, markers, and crayons.

We had an accident with our new pencil sharpener last week.  It was accidentally bumped off of the table and it no longer works.  If you happen to have an extra pencil sharpener at your house that you don't need, we could put it to great use.  We don't mind if it is electric or the old fashioned kind as long as we can sharpen our pencils.

We will have Nancy's Ice this Tuesday since we won't be at school Monday.

We will have our pre-test in Spelling this Tuesday.  Your child has a new spelling test for Unit 4 in their binder.  We are on Unit 4 Week 1.

Don't forget that we will be learning about the Presidents during the month of February.  If I have any parents that would like to come and share with the kids your knowledge of one or more Presidents we would love to hear from you.

Also, if I have any parents that have any special quilts that are in your family that tell a story we would love for you to come in and share with us.  We are reading a story about a special quilt this week in Reading.

Story this week: The Quilt Story
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Phonics: Syllables C + le
Voc. Strategy: Word Structure
Comp. Skill: Compare and Contrast
Comp. Strategy: Story Structure
Grammar: Adjectives and our Senses

In math we are working with 3 digit subtraction now.  Please make sure you are practicing with your child so they are comfortable.  They are doing great with 3 digit addition.  I have a couple that are still forgetting to add the number they have carried so they need a little more practice at home.

We have been loving Balancing and Weighing in Science.  I will get some pictures for next week so you can see all the fun we are having with this unit.  I sure do have some Super Smart Scientist in my class!

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Have a super week!

BUSY!

Please make sure you look on the right side of the blog for all of the upcoming events for January.

We had a super busy week last week as we got back into the routine of things full speed.  This week is a review week in Reading which means we will not have new spelling words or a Reading story to test on.  We will have a unit 3 benchmark test that will cover all of the skills we have learned for unit 3.  We will continue with chapter 6 in Math on 3-digit addition and subtraction.  The kids are doing great with it so far.  Don't forget that they bring their daily sheets home in their take home folder if you want to review with them.  We will also begin a very big unit on Balancing and Weighing in Science.  The kids are going to LOVE it!

I need your help with a few things as we are working on responsibility and preparing for 3rd grade.

In the morning, your child should be unpacked and ready for their day before that last bell rings and announcements start.  The kids have a morning routine of unpacking at their lockers, getting pencils sharpened, etc. The kids know that they can visit for a few minutes as they are unpacking, but then they have things to do to be prepared for their day.  We had one day last week when 5 kids just walked in the door as announcements were starting, but none of them were tardy at the office.  So I am not sure if we are visiting on the way down to the room or just taking a very long time to get there.  So if your child is dropped off in the carpool line please remind them that they need to head on to class quickly so they are unpacked and ready for their day before that last bell.

When signed papers come home this Thursday please look for problems or questions that may have been skipped.  I stress to the kids before every test and assignment to go back when they are finished and make sure they haven't skipped a question or a problem.  If they skip it, they miss it.  Also, if your child doesn't turn in an assignment that is graded they receive a 0 for that assignment.  Again, they are continually reminded to do this.  If you notice a 0 on INow for your child, and you didn't see this paper in their signed papers then they didn't turn the assignment in.

Thank you so much for helping me by reinforcing these reminders with your child.  We are going to be ready and responsible 3rd graders next year!

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Have a SUPER week!

2013!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I was so happy to see all of my sweet, sweet 2nd grade friends Thursday! I am so glad everybody is healthy and well.

We are now into a new nine weeks.  Report cards will come home this Thursday, January 10th.  There will be one copy for you to sign and return and one copy for you to keep.

I wanted to give a great big thank-you to our room moms for a fantastic Christmas party! Mrs. Scafe and Mrs. Carney did a fabulous job organizinig the party, and the kids all had a blast! Thank you ladies!!

Several Reminders:

We will have a pre-test on Unit 3 Week 5 Spelling words tomorrow.

Your child has a new reading log.  Please remember to sign it every evening that they read.  Please do not take the reading log out of their binder.  I will take it out at the end of the 9 weeks and they will receive a daily grade for it.

If your child doesn't have money in their lunch account they are given a cheese sandwich.  The lunch ladies send home a slip letting you know if your child needs money in their account.  Please check your child's binder for the slips that come home.

Grade level t-shirts may be worn every Tuesday with blue jeans.  If your child didn't purchase one, they need to wear their regular unform.  Spirit wear is only to be worn on Fridays.

This Thursday, January 10th is Spirit Night at Chappy's.

Your child has Chapter 5 Science Voc. words in their binder.  They will have a test on these words this Friday,  January 11th.  Please make sure your child studies for this test.  Once we finish Chapter 5 we will begin a very big unit on Balancing and Weighing.

January 21st is a School Holiday.

January 25th is Box Top Collection.

We will have a math test this Tuesday, January 8th on Chapter 5.  Your child will have a review sheet Monday for homework.  I know we had several kids out during this chapter so please make sure your child is comfortable with the review sheet.  Regrouping is an extremeley important skill.  Remind your child of our saying, "Bigger Bottom Better Borrow!"  :)

Our treasure box is extremely low if you would like to donate items to it.  We love the simplest things.  Happy Meal toys and dollar tree items are some of our favorites.

We will  be doing a big study on our Presidents during the month of February.  If by chance I have a parent out there that is a History expert and you would like to share your knowledge on a particular President or several Presidents we would love for you to.  The kids would love to hear from you, so please email me if you would like to share.  Your child is going to be doing a project that will involve one President.  I just wanted to give you a heads up just in case there is a particular President you want your child to research and learn more about.  If I have more than one student that wants the same President, we will handle it the old fashioned way, we will draw numbers! :)

We will have a vision screening this Thursday, January 10th.  Your child will bring home a form tomorrow.  Please return those Tuesday.

Story this Week: A Weed is a Flower
Genre: Biography
Phonics: Comparative Endings
Comp. Skill: Cause and Effect
Comp. Strategy: Monitor and Fix Up

I am always available to discuss your child with you.  Please email me if you would like a conference.

Have a super week!
