Big News!!

Somebody got a new smile!!! We all LOVE it Amir!

Parents,

If your child has braces in his or her future, they have officially been blessed in Room 124! Thank you Amir!

Just in Case you haven't heard ....

THE CATERPILLARS ARE HERE!!!!!

I get to hear so many great quotes every day in our classroom.  However, I heard one quote on Friday that sums up how I think everybody was feeling.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!  As a student was picking out his special caterpillar to put in his container, he lifted the container right up to his face and said, "Hey Little Buddy, I sure have been waiting on you to arrive for a long, long time! It sure is nice to finally meet you!"
We had just enough time to get our catepillars picked out and in our individual cups before Field Day.  On Monday we will begin the study of the life cycle of a butterfly.  I can guarantee you that you are going to hear more about your child's caterpillar over the next couple of weeks than probably anything else.  And yes, "frass" is a real word.  If you haven't heard it before, your child will fill you in.  :)

I thought you might enjoy one more sweet moment on another day in our classroom.  Our whole group reading story for the week was about our flag and the origination of it.  So we learned a lot about Patriotism and what it means as well.  We listened to a recording of Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner as the words were displayed so we could sing along.  Our story taught us about how this song came about with Francis Scott Key.  We all remembered singing it either at a ballgame or somewhere else, but we didn't know the story behind it, which made it even more special to us.  So toward the end of the week we decorated our own flag cake and as we were right in the middle of decorating, a student started singing very softly The Star Spangled Banner.  The next thing I knew, the whole class was singing while decorating, and others stopped decorating to salute the flag.  Honestly, for once, Mrs. Culp was speechless.  It was the sweetest thing I've ever seen.  Then we stopped because a debate broke out about what the correct words were to the song.  :)
Your kids amaze me daily.  I truly treasure each of them dearly! Thank you for molding them into who they are.  They make you proud!

On to other business...

Your child brought home a field trip form on Friday.

The Book Fair begins tomorrow.

If any of you have pictures from the Zoo you would like me to post on the blog, please email them to me.  Most of my pictures are of the kids that were in my group after lunch.  My, how we loved the bird house!

I wanted to make sure that you all knew that you can save any of the pictures that I post on our blog.  You may want to go back through the slideshows.

Field Day was a blast! Thank you Mrs. Bosch for providing us with water, we definitely needed it! Thank you Mrs. Chappell for providing us with a cold treat to cool off after it was over! We were HOT, HOT, HOT! Thank you Mrs. Cantey for having more energy than any child out there! You will never grow old!

Spirit Night & Story Maps

Zoo Field Trip this Wednesday!

Reminders for the field trip:

* Wear Yellow 2nd Grade T-shirts.

* If you checked that you are bringing a lunch from home, please put the paper sack in a freezer bag so it won't matter if it gets wet in the cooler. Also make sure your name is on the freezer bag. Don't bring lunch boxes or anything that can't be thrown away when we are done eating. Don't forget a drink if you are bringing your lunch from home.

* We need 2 large blankets that we can spread out to picnic on at the zoo. Please let me know if you can help us out with this.

* We need one more cooler. Also, please let me know if you are able to provide 18 waters for the kids to cool off with while we're there. Thank you!

* The buses are scheduled to leave the school at 9:00. If you are going, you may follow the bus or you may meet us at the entrance to the zoo.

* You may want to put some sun screen on your child that morning if they tend to burn easily.

This & That

Field Trip Forms Came home Thursday.

Please return them as soon as you can.  All parents are welcome on this field trip! There is plenty of room at the Zoo!

I have to give a great big thank-you to Amir's mom for sharpening a zillion pencils for us!! Thank you!! I know your hand is sore, but there are 18 very grateful 2nd graders that appreciate you! We have a new policy with pencils in room 124 that is working great so far!

Please remember to have a pack of new markers for your child this week.  In addition to the regular markers, if you would like to purchase a set of skinny markers your child will use them.  Please remember to have your child's name or initials on each marker so we can return markers that are on the floor to the rightful owner.

Spring Pictures came home last week.  Please don't forget to turn in your envelope if you are purchasing them.

SAT Testing is this week in grades 3-5.  Please make sure your child is at school on time.  We don't want to prevent the upper grades from starting on time with testing.  Testing can also affect our lunch time, so this week wouldn't be the best week to join us for lunch.

This week is a review week with the Unit test in Reading.  We do not have spelling words for this week.  Your child will have a new Unit Spelling list for next week.

In Math we will be learning about Plane Shapes in Chapter 18.
Please don't forget to go back and continue to work on telling time, money, math facts, regrouping, etc.  The kids need to continue practicing these skills over and over.  Our famous saying with regrouping is "BIGGER BOTTOM BETTER BORROW!"  Remind your child of this saying when you practice.

Don't forget to return your child's signed report card.  The other one is for you to keep.

Spirit Night this Wednesday, April 11th at Sarris' at the Station (beside Pike Road Library).  They will be donating 10% of ALL SALES that night to Blount! The time is 5:00 to 9:00.

Have a super week!

LITERATURE CIRCLES......

This is what the buzz is going to be about in Room 124!! I can't wait to teach the kids about Literature Circles! This is going to involve a lot of modeling and practicing, but the end result is going to be wonderful!

We will be celebrating SAT testing for 3-5 graders by wearing the following each day this week:

Monday –“Shine bright on testing”, wear sunglasses

Tuesday – “Hit a homerun on the test”, wear a baseball hat or visor

Wednesday – “Sock it to testing”, roll up your pants and wear crazy socks

Thursday – “Team Up for testing”, wear your blount shirt or other favorite team jersey

I am going to send home a reminder with your child this week, but I wanted to give you a heads up that each child needs a new pack of markers for their pencil box at their desk. We did a marker check the Friday before Spring Break and we are running very low. I would also encourage you to have your child write his or her intials or name on each marker. We are finding several markers on the floor at the end of the day. If the marker has an initial or name we can get it back to the right owner. I have also found that the kids LOVE writing with the skinny markers, especially during Journal time. So if you would like to get those as well, I know your child would love it. Ask your child about any other supplies they may be low on. I have been surprised at how markers have completely replaced crayons in our room.

Please don't forget that this Friday, April 6th we will be out of school for a weather day that we didn't need. Lets all cross our fingers that we have another perfect weather day!

Story: Signmaker's Assistant
Genre: Humorous Fiction
Phonics: Vowels aw, au, augh, al
Voc.  Strategy: Word Structure

Math: We will finish Chapter 17 - Probability - and test this week.  The test is tentative for Wednesday.  Please look for the Math Review sheet to come home that we have before each test.  We have had a lot of fun with this chapter.  It involved a lot of spinning, drawing, coloring, and shaking blocks in bags.

I can't wait to see my favorite 18 smiling faces in the morning! I have missed their sweet, sweet faces!

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Also, let me know if you would like to sit down for a conference at any time.
