What a great year in 2nd Grade!

Parents, you are the reason your kids are so great! Thank you so much for all of your support and help this year!

If your child is going to buy lunch, please make sure there is money in their account.  We had several slips come home last week with empty balances.

If your child will not be at school this Thursday, please send in a self addressed stamped envelope so the office can mail their report card.

I have been gradually sending things home.  Please make sure your child is cleaning out their backpack at night so they aren't overloaded the next day.

Please email me with any questions.

I hope you have a wonderful Summer with your family!

If you are attending the Honors Day Program Monday, just sign in at the office and go down to the cafeteria to get a good seat.  We will meet you there.

I can't thank you all enough for all of the treats and surprises you sent for Teacher Appreciation last week.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
You sure do know how to make a teacher feel loved and appreciated! Also a great big thank-you to Mrs. Nyberg for taking the kids to lunch and then staying with them during the luncheon Friday.

We did something a little different last week that the kids have asked to do again this week.  I gave all the homework out Monday morning, any pages etc.  The kids can turn it in as they wish as long as it is all turned in by Friday morning.  Some of them turned it all in Tuesday morning, and others waited to turn it all in by Friday.  They get to pick.

If anybody happens to have a banana at your house that you can send in Monday morning for our butterflies we would so appreciate it.  This is something a little different we wanted to try before we release them.  Last week they enjoyed oranges and sugar water.  We would also love to put some flowers in the net for them.  We plan on releasing them Tuesday afternoon.

Signed papers will come home one last time this Thursday.

Please email me with any questions you may have.  I hope your week is SUPER!

Continue Working on Multiplication facts

I have been so impressed with how quickly the kids are learning their multiplication facts.  We have a multiplication rap we have been listening to daily, and the kids are saying the answers quickly now.  Continue to work on those facts at home and over the Summer.  This will help so much in 3rd grade.

Please make note of the dates to the right of our Blog for upcoming events as we near the end of the school year.

I am so glad so many of you were able to join us on our Lanark Field Trip.  The kids told me that was their favorite one for the entire school year.

Story this Week: Cowboys
Genre: Narrative Nonfiction
Phonics: Suffixes -ness, -less
Voc. Strategy: Word Structure
Comp. Skill: Cause and Effect
Comp. Strategy: Graphic Organizer
Grammar: commas in compound sentences

In Math we are continuing with Geometric Shapes.

In Science we are anxiously awaiting the progress of our chrysalis EVERY SINGLE DAY! We are so excited about this process, we can hardly stand it! If your child brought home the cup that contained several different scientific things that were part of the metamorphosis, I apologize.  Once we moved each chrysalis to the butterfly nets, some of them couldn't part with their first habitat. :)

Please email me with any questions you may have.  I am always available if you would like to sit down and have a conference concerning your child.

Have a SUPER week!

THE CATERPILLARS ARE HERE!

Get Ready Parents! You are going to learn more about the life cycle of a butterfly than you ever thought you needed to know! We are so excited! Each child has a caterpillar in a special protected cup on their desk.  The excitement in room 124 was just too much!

Your child is going to bring home a permission slip to Lanark Monday.  Please have the slip along with the money returned by Friday.  A few of you paid for the final activities in 2nd grade all at once.  All parents are welcome to attend.  The office does need a background check if you haven't completed one this year.  Just let me know if you need a form.

Remember that we will have our last graded, timed math drill this week.  Once we finish that, we will focus on our multiplication facts.  Please start working on these at home with your child.  It will give your child a head start for 3rd grade.

I was amazed at the creativity your child showed with the Recycling Projects! We had the best time presenting the projects and hearing about the clever thinking that was involved in the process.  I am surrounded by greatness in Room 124!

Your child brought home a yellow paper explaining our Community Spirit project for 2nd and 3rd grade.  We will be collecting items for the Human Society all this week.  The items needed are specified on the sheet that came home Friday.

Don't forget that Jump Rope For Heart is this Week.  The money is due this Tuesday.  Coach Grant isn't taking the money before Tuesday.  Students will be participating during their specialist time this Wednesday.  Please remember to return the permission slip form.  Also, make sure your child has comfortable jump roping shoes on this Wednesday.  Please email me if you have any questions.

Spring Pictures will be taken this Thursday, March 20th.

We had a very important family meeting about lunchroom manners and behavior last week.  I want the kids to be able to sit where they want, and quietly talk to each other as they are eating.  I like for this to be their time to visit, because they are working so hard while in class.  If you feel like your child may need a little more reminding of lunchroom manners please discuss them together.  The kids know that they will receive a conduct sheet without a warning if manners are not used.  We don't ever play with our food or demolish our lunchroom plates.  We keep our hands to ourselves, and we use quiet voices as we visit.  We also need to remember to eat as we visit so we are done when it's time to leave.

Back On Track!

WOW! What a wild week we had! I hope everybody enjoyed our snow break!

Due to our unexpected days off, we will not test on the reading story from last week, and we will not have our Friday Spelling test from last week.  We will continue with those skills, but move on to our new story for this week, along with our new spelling words for this week.

We will have our Science Voc. test Monday, Feb. 3rd.  I am sure the kids are more than prepared by now.

I will also give the kids until Monday to turn in any Scholastic Orders that they had from last week.  I will call the orders in Monday night.  If you order online, go ahead and get those submitted.

Don't forget about the President Report project that came home last Monday.  Your child has a President, so they are ready to begin their research.

Please refer to the right side of our blog for upcoming dates.  PTA Multi-Cultural night is this Tuesday night.

For our upcoming Valentine's party we will need white gift bags with handles if anybody would like to send them in.  We will also need Valentine stickers etc. to decorate the bags.  I will send home a list of our class names for your child to address their Valentine cards.  If your child participates, remember that they need one for each child in the class.  Be on the lookout for more information to come home about our Valentine party from our awesome room moms.

Remember to practice counting change with your child at home.  We will continue with money this week in Math.  The kids loved working with pretend money last Monday.

I wanted to give you a heads-up that my Dad had surgery last Tuesday and ended up having complications.  I go to great links not to be out, but there is a possibility of it until things are better for him.  Thank you for understanding.

Please remember to check and help your child clean out their take home folders.  Their Reading Log needs to be signed nightly.  Also, the papers on their -keep at home- side need to be cleaned out.  I send home the Math lesson in case you want to review it with them at night.  Otherwise it can be cleaned out as well.

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Have a SUPER week!

Money and Telling Time

We have such an important Chapter coming up in Math this week.  We are learning how to count money.  It would help your child so much if you would get a bag full of various coins to work with at home.  We will be using fake money at school, but your child will benefit greatly from working with real coins at home.  Telling time will follow after Money so it would be great to start practicing this at home as well.

Your child brought home the President Report Friday.  I sent it home a little early just to make sure you have plenty of time.  Please make sure your child follows the guidelines on the paper to receive the full amount of points.  The report is due February 21st.  Also, if I have any parents that would like to come in during the month of February to teach us about one of our Presidents we would love to hear from you.  Just send me a quick email and we will set up a time.

Balancing and Weighing

Just Right Books!

Please look for an update on Accelerated Reader to come home with your child this week.  I am going to let you know how many points your child has, as well as their comprehension.  I want to make sure you know that the comprehension is what we need to focus on.  If your child is picking books that are "just right" for them, then it should be a breeze to make a 100 on the AR test.  Your child should have at least 90% comprehension for AR.  If it is lower, then we need to look closely at what they are doing.  It may mean that your child needs to bring home their library books to read out loud with you before they are ready to test on them.  For the most part, the kids are doing fantastic.  This update will let you know where your child stands right now.  We spend a great deal of time talking about books that are just right for us, and the way that we pick them.

Your child will also have a study guide for Chapter 5 Science Voc. that will come home Tuesday.  We will not test on these words until the following week.  I just want you to have in plenty of time to start studying.

We begin a new Unit this week.  Your child has a new spelling test.  The spelling words are Unit 4 Week 1.  We will take a pre-test on Tuesday.

The kids are doing fantastic with 3-digit addition and subtraction.  We will test on Chapter 6 this Friday.  Please make sure your child is comfortable with the review that will come home Thursday for Math homework.

Our story in Reading this week involves special quilts that were handmade.  If I have a parent that has any special quilts you could bring in to share with the class, please email me.

A great big thank-you to Matthew's mom for stocking our treasure box FULL! We were in great need of more treats!

Our Field Trip to the Shakespeare Festival is this Thursday.  Your child may dress up for the play.  I will send out an email to the chaperones Monday.

This week we will have our Unit test in Reading.  We won't have a new set of Spelling words or a Reading story that we will test on.

We are continuing with 3-digit addition in Math.  The kids have been doing a great job so far.  Please continue to practice with your child at home.  It is very important that your child is completing their homework at night.  I don't assign a great deal of homework, but what I do assign is a good review for what we have learned in class.  Continue to work on Math Facts as well.  Your child's graded timed drill will be in signed papers this week so you can see how they did.

We are continuing with Balancing and Weighing in Science.  The kids are loving this Unit!

Please email me with any questions you may have.  I hope your week is SUPER!

Happy New Year!

Update: School is closed Monday and Tuesday.  We are expected to return Wednesday, January 8th.  This will work out perfect for my friends that cheer for the Orange and Blue! ;)

Please keep a close eye on the news regarding the weather and school closing.  I know WSFA list school closings as they are told.  We have a good possibility for Monday and Tuesday.

Everything for this week as far as homework, etc. will be tentative based on how many days we are in school.  Your child needs to be ready with their spelling words either way.  If we aren't in school Monday, I will just give one test on Friday for Spelling.  Your child has their words in their binder to study.

This week begins the 3rd nine weeks.  Report cards are scheduled to come home this Thursday.  Please keep your copy and return the other one signed.

Please don't forget to send in a written excuse when your child is absent.  I have to turn these into the office.

Story this Week: A Weed is a Flower

Phonics: Comparative Endings
Comp. Skill: Cause and Effect
Comp. Strategy: Monitor and Fix Up

In Math we are continuing with subtraction in Chapter 6 / 3-digit addition and subtraction.  Please continue to practice with your child.  Your child should always show the new number when they are regrouping.

In Science we are going to start a Unit on Balancing and Weighing.  This is one of our favorite units in Science! I will make sure I take plenty of pictures so you can enjoy some of the fun with us.

Please continue to work on those math facts with your child.  Check out some of the sites I have to the right of this page.  There are several to choose from.

Please just send me an email if at any time you would like to have a conference regarding your child.  I am always happy to sit down with you.

Have a SUPER week, and do your best to stay warm!
