Weight and Balance

Dibels results are incredible!!!

Please let your child know how proud you are of the incredible progress he or she has made since the beginning of the school year! The results will come home this week. I could not be more pleased with each child in our class! That being said, I do have to remind you that our main focus will continue to be on comprehension. We are progressing right along beautifully!

Information came home last week from our room moms about our upcoming Valentine party. Your child also brought home a list with the names of each child in our class. Please remember that your child needs to have a Valentine for each child in our class. We want everybody to feel super special on this fun day.

We are in need of 18 white gift bags with a handle to use for our Valentine cards. Please email me if you are able to provide them.

We will be taking class pictures this Thursday, February 2nd.  Your child will still need to be dressed in uniform clothing for the picture.  I hope we are all present that day for this very special memory of 2nd grade.

Due to early dismissal last week we did not do our math lesson that day, which meant we were not ready for our test Friday.  We will review Monday and then take the test this Tuesday.  Please make sure your child does the review sheet that will come home Monday.  Chapter 13 will be on Using Money.  Once we finish that chapter we will be ready for our STORE! I know you have all heard about the store with much excitement! I can't thank you enough for all of the items you have sent in.  We may have to keep our store open for a few days in order to get our full use out of all the items!  Thank you for being so supportive of our learning!

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Also, if at any time you would like a conference don't hesitate to let me know.  Have a super week!

State Projects

New Nine Weeks Begins Monday!

WOW!
We have already finished the 2nd nine weeks! The 3rd nine weeks starts Monday.  Report Cards will come home this Thursday.

Our class will be Dibeled this Wednesday.  Please make sure your child has a great night of rest and a good breakfast that morning.  I can't wait to see how much growth we have had since school started!

Our State Projects were just incredible! I beamed with pride as each student got up and very confidently presented their project.  I can't help but to be proud as I watch future world changers in the making.  I truly am the luckiest teacher.  Thank you for raising such exceptional children.  Your hard work is very noticed and obvious to me daily.

I wanted to give you a heads up that we will be focusing on past Presidents in Social Studies during the month of February.  Your child will have a project involving a President that you will get information on in the near future.

Thanks so much for all of the items coming in for our grocery store.  Please continue to send them.  Remember that we will not be opening our store until we are finished with both chapters on money.  Does anybody have a child's grocery cart that we may borrow?  I have one, but it would be fun to have more than one so a few people can shop at the same time.
Please continue to practice with your child at home.  We are practicing every day with our real money at school.  Thank you so much for sending it in.

Perfect Burst of Sunshine!

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose!"   Dr. Seuss

Book Orders are Due Tuesday!

Remember that you can use the code that I sent home to order on the web site, or you can still send in the order form like we have done in the past. Just make sure you send in a check to Scholastic if you send in an order form. I can't mail them cash. The cut off will be Tuesday.

* If you haven't sent in your child's money for our money unit, please send it in Tuesday. This is when we will begin learning about Money.

* Field Trip forms and money are due January 20th.

* Continue to save and send in items for our store that will be opening once we are finished learning about money.

* We are in need of Crisco Oil for a little Science experiment this week. If you have some at home you can send that would be great. We don't need an entire can so if you already have an opened can you would like to share, that would be great.

STATE PROJECTS AND REPORT SHEETS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18TH.  Please have your child practice at home so that they are familiar with what they are teaching us about their state.

*Your child copied down their spelling words for this week.  Both copies have been broken this week so I was unable to copy their new list.  I will get it to them as soon as the copier is working.  Also remember that they will be on our schoolnotes homework page as well.

*Please remind your child to bring both of their library books to school daily.  They love to read the books in our classroom, but they aren't all AR testable.  We need to get a little more focused on our AR.  I have told the kids that we should all be in the 25 point club by the end of this month.  Keep in mind that their comprehension should also stay at 90 percent or above.  I hope you signed up at the beginning of the year to receive emails when your child takes a test on a book.  I will make sure your child has time to read and take test, but I need them to bring their books daily.  We have a classroom FULL of beautiful readers, and I want this to be reflected in AR as well.

Please continue to practice with money as we begin learning about it in Math.

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Also, continue to check STI so you are up to date on your child's grades.  We are already getting ready to close our 2nd nine weeks.

New Year's Goals

End of Unit Benchmark Testing is this Week.

We will not have spelling words or a reading story this week to test on.  We will be reviewing previously learned skills from the past unit and taking a test toward the end of the week in Reading.

Very Important information came home last week about a field trip we will be taking in March to see a play at the Davis Theather.  We have to turn the money in ahead of time to reserve our spots.  The money deadline is January 20th.  If you write a check, please make it out to Blount.  Otherwise, please send the exact amount because I will not be able to make change.

Also, information came home about a Box of Facts Project that is due January 18th.  Your child picked a certain State to research.  This is all located on their sheet.  Please pay close attention to the Project Rubric on the first page so that there isn't anything left out on your child's project.

OUR TREASURE BOX IS VERY LOW.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND IN ANY DONATIONS WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.  IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH TO MAKE A 2ND GRADER VERY HAPPY.

Please continue to practice math facts with your child.  We had our frist graded drill and those are in STI if you would like to know how your child did before signed papers come home.  I ended up counting that grade as a daily because as a whole they were not as high as I would like to see.  We are doing several things in our classroom to help us, but your child also needs to work on them at home as well.  We have a fabulous new game that we tried out last week.  I must say that it was quite the hit and nobody wanted to stop working on their math facts!! We are also continuing to work on Math Facts in a Flash.  There is a rumor that the math store opening soon and room 124 is geared up and ready.

The kids have already told me that they are working on money at home.  A great big thank you for getting a head start on this!! We are planning on finishing chapter 11 this week and testing this Friday on it.  Remember that it is a review of addition and subtraction.  The biggest problem we have had so far is remembering to look at the sign first before we work the problem.  We aren't used to having mixed problems of addition and subtraction together.

In preparing for the future, once we are getting to the end of our study on money, we will celebrate our new knowledge by turning our classroom into one big grocery store! This will be the perfect way to put into practice everything we have learned.  In order to do this big, I need your help.  If you could go ahead and start sending in any empty food box containers that don't have any kind of food on them.  For example, ceral boxes, taco boxes, oatmeal boxes etc..  We need a big variety of items to make this a lot of fun.  Last year I had a parent that cleaned out shampoo bottles and sent them in, the kids loved that.  Anything that is free of the product that came in it is perfect.  Also, it would be great if you could go ahead and stick a price on it for us.  I can promise you, this will be a fantastic learning experience for your child!  Thank you!!

In Science we will be starting a Unit of study on Balancing and Weighing.  Make sure to ask your child about what he or she is learning.  I will be sure to get a lot of pictures for you to see! The kids are going to thoroughly enjoy this unit!

Your child has a very important Journal that is used frequently.  Check with your child to see if they still have plenty of paper in it.  We have a few that are getting toward the end and need to be replaced.

Thanks so much for all you do!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I can't wait to see all of my favorite 2nd grade faces tomorrow! I am always surprised at how much my friends seem to change in the two weeks we are out for Christmas. They do a lot of growing over the break. I know we are going to have a lot of catching up to do, and I can't wait!

Due to the fact that we have a short school week, our reading test on Friday will be open book. It will also only count as a daily grade instead of a test grade. We will still thoroughly cover the story.

We will have our end of the Unit Benchmark test next week for Unit 3.

I also wanted to give you a heads up in Math. Once we finish Chapter 11 we will begin learning about money. It would be fantastic if you could get out coins with your child and start practicing ahead of time. At my house for my son, I filled a bag with coins and we get it out and practice a little every night. They need to practice with real money. When we get a little closer to the money chapter I will be sending home a letter with your child requesting for them to bring in a few coins for them to use when we learn about money. I take the bags up every day and store them safely. I am happy to report that last year we didn't have a single coin misplaced. I am hoping for the same record this year. :) We are extremely responsible in room 124! Once we are finished with money they will bring their bag of coins back home.

Please also practice telling time with your child. We do a little of this every day with our calendar math, but the more practice the better. We will be covering Telling Time in the future as well, and your child can't have too much practice.

Story this Week:  A Weed Is a Flower
Genre: Biography
Phonics: Comparative Endings
Comp. Skill: Cause and Effect
Comp. Strategy: Monitor and Fix Up
Grammar: Verbs - am, is, are, was, were

Math: Chapter 11 This Chapter will be a review of 2-digit addition and subtraction.

A great big thank you to Mrs. Bosch and Mrs. Harris for organizing an awesome Christmas Party.  Thanks to all of you for all you did to help make it wonderful for the kids.  They thoroughly enjoyed it!  Make sure you enjoy the new slideshows I added.  When you are viewing the pictures, click on the title that goes with that post so you will see the entire picture.  When I post more than one slideshow it will sometimes show half of the picture unless you click on that specific post.

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Thanks for all you do!
