Smartboard, The Theater, & Crafts, Crafts, Crafts!!!

Christmas Party this Week

Parents,

I just wanted to assure you that your child's safety and well being is always my greatest priority.  As a mom, this weekend I hugged my kids a little tighter and spent a lot less time sweating the small stuff.  I am having a hard time wrapping my 39 year old mind around the events that took place in Conneticut.  I honestly don't see how a 7 or 8 year old could process any of it.  That being said, I feel like it is your decision as to how much your child does or does not know about what happened.  I do not plan on addressing this with the class.  If I have individual kids that know about it and want to talk about it, I will be glad to talk to them privately.
I plan on loving your child and making our room a happy, safe place for learning to take place.  We have a very busy, fun week ahead of us.  Please email me with any questions or concerns you may have.  Thank you for always supporting our classroom.

shifting gears.... :)

Please don't forget to send in the item that you signed up to bring for the Christmas party this Thursday.  Our party is going to start closer to 1:45 because the kids are with Mr. Darby until then.  Please feel free to join us.  Thank you all so much for helping to make this a great time for the kids.  Also a huge thank you to our room moms for all of their hard work.  Thanks a ton Mrs. Scafe and Mrs. Carney!!!

We are in great need of anti-bacterial wipes for our classroom.  We are completely out, and this is not the time to be without! It wouldbe great if everybody could bring in one each.  You would be surprised how often we use these, especially during flu season.

We're going to the Theather!

This Tuesday is our Field Trip Day! We will be leaving the school around 9:00 and returning around 12:30.  We will eat a late lunch once we return.  We are going to dress up for the play.  Please remember that the guidelines for dress need to be similar to picture day, no spaghetti straps for the girls, etc.  The kids are so excited about going to a "fancy" place in their nice clothes.  We have also been discussing our very best manners.  You may want to also remind your child to be on their best behavior.  We have been reading the story and discussing it as we read.  We are going to finish it tomorrow.  Several of the kids are already familiar with it, so we have been having some very good discussions.  Please email me if you have any other questions.

A great big thank-you to Mrs. Scafe and Mrs. Carney for all of the work they have done for the Christmas party.  Your child brought home a red sheet with information about it last week.

Also a great big thank-you to Mrs. Denton and Mrs. Andrews for taking the class to lunch on teacher treat day.  I appreciate this so much!

Story: Anansi Goes Fishing
Genre: Folk Tales
Phonics: Compound Words
Comprehension Strategy: Cause and Effect
Comprehension Strategy: Monitor and Fix Up

In Math we are starting on subtraction in Chapter 5.  Please practice this at home with your child at night.  We will begin borrowing this week.  The saying you are going to hear your child say often is "Bigger Bottom Better Borrow!"  This is the question we ask when looking to see if we need to borrow.  This skill is so important, so please review with your child.  Remember that they will have their lesson sheets on the keep at home side in their binders.

Have a super week!

Big Hearts In Room 124!

Wow! We had an incredibly busy academic week and ended it on Friday by making Christmas cards for injured soliders.  We definitely love and appreciate our military and their families.  The kids put so much love and creativity into the cards, and had a blast making them.  A great big thank you to Mrs. Carney for heading this up for us, and mailing the cards.

Christmas crafting will be in full swing this week and I have two of the strangest request you have probably ever heard.  You will just have to trust me! ;)
We are going to need about a cup of white sand.  I am hoping that one of you has a sandbox that stays covered and some sand you could share.  We are going to mix it with glue for one of our projects.
Next request is that I need a piece of bread for each child.  We have 24 kids and we could use a few extra just in case we have a mess up.  It doesn't matter if it is white or wheat.
THANKS A TON!

VERY IMPORTANT! We will have our last math test for the nine weeks this Tuesday on Chapter 4.  We will still have several daily grades in Math, but this is the last test grade for the nine weeks.  It is so important that you go over the review homework with your child Monday night to make sure they are ready for the test.  I also wanted to remind you that your child should have the daily lessons from their book that we do in class in their binder daily.  If you need to review the lesson with your child, they are there.  Otherwise feel free to throw them away.  I know their binders fill up quickly.  Also, don't forget to keep an eye on grades in Inow.  As a parent, I prefer to see grades right away instead of seeing two weeks worth in signed papers.  I don't like any surprises when it comes to my kids and their grades.  You are probably the same way.

I also wanted to give you a heads up that we will have a timed math drill that will count as a test grade in January.  Your child has been taking timed math drill test often, but they have not counted as a grade.  This has just been practice for them.  I cannot stress to you enough how important it is for your child to have their math facts down quickly.  When we play math games in the room I do not let them count on their fingers. Please also have them practice with Math Facts in a Flash at home.  They can't pass the levels at home, but they can practice.  We have been working on Math Facts in a flash in the room as well.  The kids are very antsy for the Math Store to open.  We will have some very happy shoppers once it does!

I also have to BRAG HUGE on our classroom full of amazing readers! The kids have been reading up a storm and doing an amazing job with AR.  Your child deserves a pat on the back for a job well done.  It is a good problem for a teacher to have when I have to ask the kids to put their books down when they are walking in the hallway.  I also see a lot of sad faces when I tell the kids that they can' t take their library books to the lunchroom because we don't want them to be near food or drinks.  And yes, they even ask to take their books when we go outside to recess.  Room 124 LOVES to read and it shows!! If your child has informed you that our class won the Aviator, that means that we had the highest points and comprehension for 2nd grade with AR.  They announce it during morning announcements and the kids go wild! We have been winning it every week now for several weeks.  I don't think they plan on sharing it with any other 2nd grade classes either, but we'll see.  :)

If at any time you would like to sit down and discuss your child, just send me an email and we will set up a time.  I am always available for conferences.

Have a super week!!
