We have a super exciting and busy week coming up!

Our Holiday Party is this Thursday from 1:30 - 2:15.  A great big thank-you to our room moms for planning a fantastic time.  Please don't forget to send in your items for that special day.  If you plan on checking your child out after the party is over, please don't forget to do so before you come down to the party so you can bring me a slip from the office.  Thank you.

You have probably heard that there has been a lot of crafting in Room 124 lately.  If you would like to help us out, we could really use some more glitter.  We especially need red and green, but we seem to like all colors of glitter in our class.

I wanted to let you know that if you would like to place your Scholastic orders on line without having to send back in the forms and money, our code for our classroom is K2YLD.  You will still have the option of sending them in as we have been if you would like.

Math:  In Math this week we will review our chapter Monday and test on it Tuesday.  Please look for a review sheet to come home Monday night.
Also, don't forget that we will have a timed math drill that will be graded this Wednesday.  It will only include addition facts this time.

We will have a science Vocabulary test Wednesday.  Please make sure your child is comfortable with the study guide.  We have studied these words so much in class that they should be very comfortable with them.

If you have plans to go out of town a little early and your child won't be at school Friday, please email me so I can go ahead and give them their reading and spelling test.  Two weeks is a long time to remember that information.

Please don't forget to send Nancy's money on Monday if you want your child to purchase it.

I hope you spend this Christmas season making wonderful family memories with the people you cherrish the most.  I know I am incredibly thankful that I get to spend every school day with each precious face in our room.  I am truly thankful and blessed.  Merry Christmas to each of you!

Shopping Day for The Holiday Store is Monday, Dec. 5th!

We are in full swing with the Christmas Season!
Your child brought home an envelope with a letter explaining the Holiday store at Blount. Our shopping day is TOMORROW. If you would like your child to participate, please help them fill out the envelope that was sent home and discuss the people they should have on their list.

Look for a letter in your child's binder to come home soon about our Christmas party that will be on Thursday, December 15th.

A great big thank you to all the moms that came and ate lunch with the class last week for Teacher Treat Day. It was a fantastic treat!!

We have been very busy with Christmas crafts and we love to listen to Christmas music as we "craft"! If your child has a favorite Christmas CD that they would like to share with us they are welcome to bring it.

If I have any parents that would like to come and do a special Christmas craft with the class please send me an email and we can set up a time. I have found out that Room 124 NEVER gets tired of crafts!

We are in need of paint pens for a craft project coming up. The main colors we need are black, orange, brown, and red.

In Math we will continue with Subtraction.  The kids are doing very well with regrouping.  Remember to practice Math facts with your child.  We will have a timed drill test the week of Dec. 12th.  I am so pleased with how well they are doing on Math Facts in a Flash.  We are getting better and better!!  Also, don't forget to visit the Math Web Sites on the side of our page.  We have heard a rumor of the Math Store opening up in January so we are going to be more than ready to get those Bount Bucks when it opens!

Look for a Science Voc. study sheet to come home this week.

Please email me at beth.culp@mps.k12.al.us  with any questions or concerns.

Thank you so much for all you do!

I LOVE spending my day with a room full of precious children that LOVE to read!

We sure did have a fantastic week celebrating American Education Week.  I was so proud to have every single person in Room 124 participating in all of the activities throughout the week.  I have to say that my favorite day was Career Day.  I already knew I had a room full of world changers, but I sure did love having a look into their very bright futures.  They also showed just how brave and patient they are as we endured the longest time I have ever spent in the hallway for bad weather.  Thank goodness we had good books to pass the time! Also a first, we ate our lunch in the hallway.  I am very thankful we were all safe that day.
A great big thank you to all of the moms that came and shared books with us as well.  The kids LOVED this time, and I hope we get to do it again.  Thank you!

A letter came home to you about a Holiday Shop that we will have to do some Christmas shopping at Blount.  Please discuss with your child what you would like for them to do.  I will tell you that the kids take a lot of pride in being able to do their own shopping for people that are special to them.  The prices are also very reasonable for young shoppers.  I still have a treasure that my son gave me last year that he purchased from the shop.

Thanks for all of the items that were sent in for the Adopt a Troop program we participated in.  I can't think of a better way to enter the Holiday Season than by showing your kids the importance of helping others.

In Math we will finish up Chapter 9 and test on it Wednesday, November 30th.  Please go over the review sheet with your child to make sure they are comfortable with it.  We have been doing very well with regrouping.

Don't forget to practice math facts.  There are some excellent web sites on the side of this page that would be very helpful.

If at any time you would like to sit down and discuss the progress of your child, please just send me an email and we will set up a time right away.

A book order is coming home Monday, Nov. 28th and it will be due back Friday, Dec. 2nd.  Remember that you can write one check for all of the orders if you order from more than one catalog.

I would love it if we could spread several of you out throughout that day. Your child would also love it. I know you are all experts at this because every child in Room 124 loves literature!
If you would like a suggestion, we will be reading a lot about Thanksgiving this week.  Any book that you may have that relates would be fantastic.
Friday is College Game Day. Have your child wear their favorite college shirt or sweatshirt.

Adopt-A-Troop information came home last week.  Please look at the list and send in any items you are able to.  We will be collecting these items until November 18th.  What an excellent way to show our kids just how much we appreciate our military and all they do for us!

As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday I have to tell each of you just how much I appreciate you and the amazing job you do as parents.  Your child comes to school each day and represents you just so incredibly well! You will be happy to know that the hard work you do at home pays off with your child each and every day.  I am so blessed to spend my day with your child.  Thank you!!

Grade Level T-Shirt Order Forms Are Coming Home This Week!

It is time to order our grade level t-shirts.  The following is the schedule from the office.  Please order a shirt for your child if at all possible.  We will wear these on field trips and once a week.  They only place the order once for the year.
Monday, Nov. 7th - Order forms go home

Tuesday, Nov. 8th - Kindergarten & 1st grade

Wednesday, Nov. 9th - 2nd grade & 3rd grade

Thursday, Nov. 10th - 4th grade & 5th grade

Friday, Nov. 11th - No School! - Veteran's Day :)
We have an ordering deadline with our supplier; therefore, this is the only week that we will accept orders.
Our PTA meeting this Tuesday has had a time change. The time will now be at 6:00. If you failed to place your order for Marco's pizza that deadline has been extended until this Monday. If you don't still have your order form just email me and I will send you the attachment to print out and send in. There is going to be a lot of pizza and drinks at the meeting for you to purchase if you are unable to order ahead of time. Please plan to attend.
Your child will not have homework that night and dinner will be provided! WIN/WIN!
This week is a review week in Reading.  Remember that we won't have a spelling test.  Your child will have new spelling words for Unit 3 in their binder by the end of the week.  We will be taking a Benchmark Test on Unit 2.
Don't forget the Science Vocabulary test this Tuesday.  Remember to look over the study guide.
Thanks for working so hard on regrouping! We are doing very well with it! We will continue with Chapter 8 and 2-Digit Addition.  Our plan is to test on Thursday.  You will see a review sheet Wednesday if we are ready.
Please don't schedule any appointments for Wednesday afternoon if at all possible.  We have Josh Johnson coming from WSFA to do a weather segment with 2nd grade and he is fantastic with the kids.  I don't want any of them to miss it!
Don't forget that we are out of school this Friday for Veteran's Day.
Thanks for all you do! Your hard work with your child shows greatly through them every single day! What an honor it is to teach your child!

The Book Fair is Here!

The book fair will be here until Thursday.  Please send money in a bag or some form of carrier if your child is going to shop.  I want to warn you that there are a lot of little toy items there as well as books.  You may want to come up with an agreement with your child about how much money should be spent on books.  The toy items were eyed very closely during our preview time Friday.

We had a fantastic time at Lanark.  The weather was perfect! I will post a slideshow so you can enjoy some of our memories from the day.

A great big thank you to Amir's mom for providing us with a pumpkin! We had a blast getting all of the seeds and pulp out of it.  Bella's mom was kind enough to perfectly carve a Halloween Cat for us on our pumpkin.  We thought she did a perfect job!  We didn't get to cook our seeds at school, so I brought them home to cook.  We'll let you know tomorrow how they tasted.  The kids selected the seasoning to cook them in.  It makes me laugh every year when I am told that they taste just like chicken! We'll see if this year is any different.  Second graders are the best!!

American Education Week is coming up November 14-18th.  We will be doing a lot of different activities during that week to celebrate, but the one you need to start thinking about is Career Day.  We will come to school that Wednesday, November 16th dressed as our future career.  You may want to start talking to your child about this to make sure you have the attire you need.
Also, on that Thursday I would love for guest readers to come and read to our class.  Please let me know if you are available.

A VERY IMPORTANT LETTER CAME HOME IN SIGNED PAPERS FROM THE PTA!!  It was in regards to the November 8th PTA meeting.  If you are going to pre-order pizza for the meeting the form needs to be turned back in by Tuesday, November 1st.  Please make plans to attend this meeting.

Your child will have some kind of practice in math every night this week except for Monday (Happy Halloween).  Please carefully go over it to make sure your child is understanding it completely.  Please email me with any questions.  Every question is important, so please ask.  If we are ready, we will have a math test Friday.  If your child doesn't have the review sheet Thursday, you will know that we are waiting until next week.

A study guide for Science Voc. for Chapter 3 is coming home Monday.  We will not test on these words until next Tuesday, November 8th.

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN BEGINS MONDAY.  If your child brings money please have them put it in a small bag.  If a check is written, it can be made out to Blount.

We will be out of school November 11th for Veteran's Day.

Thinking ahead ...
If I have a parent that would like to come in and do a Thanksgiving project/craft with the class during the month of November please email me with your idea.  Room 124 loves crafts and projects!!

Have a fantastic Week!

Field Trip to Lanark Monday, Oct. 24th!

Don't forget to wear your Blount spirit wear!  Refer back to last weeks entry if you have any questions.  Our plan is to leave on the bus at 9:00 from the school and reach Lanark by 9:30.  Email me if you have any other questions.  We are going to have a blast!!

This week we are celebrating Red Ribbon Week at Blount.  Your child brought home a sheet to let you know what we are doing each day.  Please remind them to check it so they won't be upset that they didn't participate in the activity for the day.

A sheet came home last week telling you about a Vision screening we will be doing.  Please sign the sheet to indicate if you want your child to participate or not.  The nurse needs a sheet from each student.

A very important sheet also came home about our next PTA meeting that will include PIZZA! The sheet gives you details, so please me sure to check it out.  Speaking of our PTA, what an outstanding Fall Festival we had this year!! I am always amazed at the job our PTA does for us! If you see a PTA member please be sure to thank them for such an outstanding job! Blount wouldn't be all it is without them!!

You have probably been hearing your child mention Mrs. Wilder coming into our room and doing some activities with us.  She is our gifted teacher here at Blount and she has been doing some screening for us in 2nd grade.  She does a fantastic job, and the kids have enjoyed working with her.  And to just be quite honest, I absolutely love how she goes on and on about how amazing our class is! What an honor it is to teach such incredible kids!!

As we start a new nine weeks this week, your child will have 1 dictated sentence every week on their spelling test.  This will be a very simple sentence that will include one of their spelling words.  I will be checking to make sure they begin it correctly and end it correctly, along with correct spelling.  As we discussed in the cluster conferences at the beginning of the year, everything has to be correct in the sentence.

In Math this week we will be working on Graphing.  We plan to have a test this Friday.  Please look for a review sheet for homework this Thursday.
Ask your child about our surprise visit from Zero the Hero on Friday.  WOW! I had no idea just how famous he was! Apparently he is such a busy guy he came while we were gone and left in a dash without a trace! He was kind enough to leave us 10 Fall surprises!

I wanted to give you a heads up with  Math Drills.  We have been practicing with timed math drills this first nine weeks.  We have increased our speed significantly already.  Please have your child practice their math facts at home as well.  We have been doing math games to increase our speed, as well as Math Facts in a Flash on the computer.  In December your child will have a timed Math Drill that will be graded and it will count as a Math test grade.

Please email me with any questions or concerns.  Have a fantastic week!

FALL FESTIVAL

WEEK IS HERE!!!
I sure do hope everybody is able to attend our Fall Festival this year.  It is this Thursday, Oct. 20th from 4:30-7:30.  It is a guaranteed great time for everybody, so please come if you are able! If you didn't purchase wristbands ahead of time, you are still able to purchase them at the gate.

From the PTA:
Anyone in grades 1st, 2nd, and 3rd wishing to donate a prize (<$5) or cake to the prize walk may do so from now until Oct. 19th. Please bring your cakes no earlier than the 20th.

Please remember to send in your child's permission slip and money for our field trip to Lanark.  I was curious about the 5 chaperons per class rule that they have so I called them to check on it.  I personally feel much better having many adults with us out in the woods and near the water.  Lanark told me that they were having a little bit of a problem with the adults visiting during their demonstrations etc. So I tell you that to let you know that if you would still like to join us I think it will be okay as long as we are mindful of this situation.
Also, if your child is bringing a lunch from home, please make sure it is in a zip loc bag.  You can put everything in a paper sack but then but that in a zip loc so it doesn't get wet in the cooler.  We want to be able to throw everything away after we eat.
If I have a parent that would like to send waters please let me know.
Students may wear their Blount Spirit wear on field trip day.
Email me if you have any questions.

Story:  Turtle's Race with Beaver
Genre: Folk Tale
Phonics: r-Controlled Vowels -er, -ir, -ur
Comp. Skill: Sequence
Comp. Strategy: Summarize

In Math this week we will finish up Chapter 3 with Comparing and Ordering Numbers.  We will be ready to test on Chapter 3 this Thursday.  Make sure your child does the Math review sheet for homework Wednesday as a review.

A study sheet will come home Monday with your child for Social Studies.  This is simply a review of what we already know.  Your child will have a test on Thursday.

The Community Book parts look wonderful.  We will be sharing them tomorrow and then making our book.  We were unable to get to them Friday because we were so busy making skeletons.

Please let me know if you are able to send in a pumpkin the week of Oct. 24th.  We have several Math and cooking activities we would like to do with one.  Thank you.

If you are ordering school pictures, please send the money in by this Friday.

Remember that Nancy's is available for purchase every Monday now.  $1.00

Please email me with any questions you may have.

Have a wonderful week!

Spectacular 2nd Graders!

Field Trip to Lanark...

.. is in the plans for October 24th.  Look for more information to come home regarding it soon.

*  Your child brought home a page to contribute to our Community Book we are making.  It is due this Friday.  Remember that if you don't have time to go and take a picture, your child may draw one or cut one out of a magazine.

*  A sheet came home with your child Friday about our PTA.  If you haven't joined our PTA, please consider doing so.  I would love for our class to have 100% membership.  Your child may ask anyone to join.  In the past, I have even had family pets that were members.

* Your child has been bringing home several things regarding the Fall Festival, etc. in their take home folder so please make sure you are checking it.

*If somebody can send in a pumpkin for our class the week of October 17th please let me know.

We LOVED showing off our Dirt Babies this past week.  Room 124 is certainly full of creativity!

Pay close attention to the spelling words this week.  The apostrophe has to be in the correct place for the word to be correct.  We will be practicing with noodles so we are familiar with where it goes.

We will have a Math test this Wednesday.  This chapter has been very easy for us, but please check your child's review sheet as they are working it to make sure there aren't any careless errors that are made.

I have added a few new web sites to our Link list on the side of our blog.  Check them out with your child when you have a chance.

Also, if your child has access to an iPad have them check out the SpellBoard App.  This has become a favorite for learning spelling words with my child.

Remember that Monday, October 10th is a Holiday for students.

Email me with any questions or concerns.  Have a fantastic week!

I can't wait to see how our Dirt Babies return to school tomorrow. We sure have had a fun time with this science project.

A great big thank you to all of the moms that came up and ate with the class for Teacher Treat Day. What a huge treat that was!! Thank you!!

We are starting a new Unit this week so your child has a new set of spelling words in their binder.

This is the week...

THAT THE MCWANE CENTER COMES!!!!
Thank you so much for all getting the money turned in by the due date.  We can't wait for Wednesday!

In other big news, Nancy's Italian Ice will now begin coming to Blount EVERY MONDAY instead of every other week.  Please make sure your child has $1.00 if you would like for them to purchase some Italian Ice.

We would love for our class to have 100% membership for PTA.  If you haven't joined yet, please consider it.  I am convinced that we have the best PTA in the State!!!!  You just would not believe how much they do for Blount!

We used a new favorite web site this week to help us learn our spelling words.  It has been over on the side in the links section if you would like to use it at home.  Trust me, your kids LOVED Spellingcity.com! Give it a try at home if you need something new when learning spelling words.

I have a few changes to tell you about for this week with our Reading and Spelling. At the beginning of the school year the 2nd grade teachers waited the first week to start our reading story due to the fact that the kids were taking the Benchmark test and it was a very big task for them as new 2nd graders. However, we have now been told that we are still required to give the end of the Unit test this week from downtown. Due to this, we took our reading test early last week as an open-book test. If you haven't checked your child's scores on Pearson Success, they did fabulous on it! We started another story, which happened to be a play, on Thursday. We will finish that story at the beginning of this week. That grade will not count due to the fact that we didn't have our regular amount of time to be prepared for it. This works out well because we have really been enjoying acting out the play. Speaking of the play, you will see a slide show of several pictures posted after this post. You may notice your child in a very peculiar pose or with a very unusual expression. Do not be alarmed, this is just your child "in character" for the play. They insisted that I get them in action. I have quite the class of actors and actresses as you will see! What a great time we have learning together!!

We will have regular spelling words this week as well.  These will be the last spelling words for Unit 1.  Normally during an end of the Unit Test week we will not have spelling words.  This week is an exception.  We will take the unit test toward the end of the week.

Story:  The Strongest One
Genre: Play
Phonics: Consonant Digraphs
Comprehension Skill: Realism and Fantasy
Comprehension Strategy: Monitor and Fix Up

Last week in Grammar along with Statements and Questions, we also learned about Commands and Exclamations.

We will have a Math Test this Thursday.  Please look for the review sheet to come home Wednesday night.

A great big thank-you to Piper's family and Mallory's family for sending in the items for our place value activity in Math.  We had a blast learning place value with food! This made learning SO MUCH FUN! Thank you!

I am going to go ahead and send home the new Science Vocabulary words for Chapter 2 and a Social Studies study guide.  We will not test on either this week, but I wanted to give them to you plenty of time ahead to look over a little bit each night.

Our Writing Center is BY FAR the absolute favorite center in the room.  We love to write in room 124!! Due to this love, our writing center is always in need of re-stocking.  We can use just about anything to make a book or a beautiful piece of writing.  We are always in need of staples and tape.  If you have anything at home you would like to send in, please feel free!

Thanks for everything you do! I appreciate you sharing your world changer with me every day! Your child sure does make 2nd grade a very happy place to be!

Email me with any questions or concerns.

Life Long Readers!

We are on our way to becoming readers for life in room 124! This week we talked a lot about choosing JUST RIGHT books.  I cannot stress just how important it is for your child to read books that are just right for them.  This is how we will increase our fluency as well as our comprehension.  We are in full swing of going to the library and checking out books now.  Your child has been given a zpd that tells them exactly what reading level they should be checking out.  If your child brings a library book home that they are having trouble reading, ask them first of all if it is in their zpd.  If it is, then ask your child if they did the 5 finger rule when they picked the book out at the library.  One of the main times the kids go to the library during the day is during reading groups / centers in our classroom.  This means that I don't always see the books that are brought back in during this time.
Also, please make sure your child brings their library books to school each day.  Our weekly library day is Wednesday.  Your child may go back during the week as soon as they have finished and tested on both of their books.  We are doing a great job with this!

MPS has started a new policy with absences this year.  If your child is absent for any reason I am required to call you that day to find out why unless I have already received an email from you about the absence.  In order for me to avoid bothering you at home with a sick child, please just shoot me an email that morning letting me know that your child is sick, etc. and that will be sufficient documentation so I won't have to bother you with a phone call.  Thank you so much for your help with this.

We (teacher included!) are so excited about the McWane Center coming September 28th.  Please remember to send in the money for this on site field trip by September 23rd.  It is going to be an amazing time!!

I am hoping you have heard all about the dirt babies that are now living in room 124.  I am hoping we will see some hair growth on our little babies very soon.  You may want to brainstorm a little with your child about what they would like to dress their little dirty baby up like when it comes home.  We usually keep them until their hair is good and ready for a trim and that is when they come home to you for an outfit makeover.  The kids love this, so have fun!  What a fun time we had wrapping up our chapter on plants by making them.

Whole Group Reading:

A Walk in the Desert
Genre: Expository Nonfiction
Phonics: Inflected Endings -s, -ed, -ing
Comprehension Skill: Main Idea and Details
Comprehension Strategy: Text Structure

Grammar:
We will be learning about Statements and Questions
A statement is a sentence that tells something.  A statement ends with a period (.) .
A question is a sentence that asks something.  A question ends with a question mark (?) .

Math:
We will finish up our chapter on subtraction Monday and have a chapter test on it Tuesday.  Remember to go through the review sheet with your child Monday night.  The review sheet is very similar to the test.
Wednesday we will begin learning about Place Value.
I would like to do a fun activity with place value that will involve large marshmellows, toothpicks, and Fruit Loops.  If you are able to send any of these items please let me know.  Also, if there is a problem with your child eating any of these items, please let me know.

You may want to put on your calendar a reminder about Nancy's Italian Ice coming every OTHER Monday.  The next Monday they will come is September 26th.  The cost is $1.00.

Sunday, September 11, 2011

Everybody put on your seatbelts...

We have a very busy week ahead of us!
*  Very important reminder that your child would want you to remember - they will have the opportunity to buy a Nancy's Italian Ice tomorrow (Monday, Sept. 12th) for $1.00.
*  We will have a Science Voc. test this Wednesday.  It will come straight from the study guide they have had on Chapter 1.
* We will have a Social Studies test on the Continents and Bodies of water this Friday.  Your child brought a study guide home last Friday.  They are responsible for only knowing where the Continents and bodies of water are located.  They do not have to know how to spell them.  We will be reviewing these all week in class as well.
* We will be making our Dirt Babies this Friday.  A 2nd grade parent has sent in an extremely large amount of potting soil for all of 2nd grade.  However, each class is still going to need a small bag in order for us to have enough.  If I have a parent that would like to send this small bag of Miracle Grow in please let me know.  I will provide the rest of the materials.  The kids are so excited about doing this project! I am sure you have already heard about it.  We're going to cross our fingers that our room will stay at a warm enough temperature for them to grow quickly.  We are already seeing some growth in our indoor greeenhouse that we planted a week ago.
* Dibels results and Star reports for reading came home last week.  Please make sure you send the Dibels results back in signed.  You may keep that copy of the STAR report that was sent home.
* We now have our ZPD's (reading levels) and we can't get to the library fast enough! We are doing a great job of taking AR test.  Whenever you would like to see your child's AR folder just ask them to bring it home to share with you.  Please make sure your child brings their library books to school daily.
* We sure did have a fantastic time as everybody shared their About Me Poster last week.  We learned so much about each other.  I have loved learning more and more about our wonderful community of learners in room 124.  One thing is for sure, Room 124 LOVES TO READ!!
* I introduced our reading groups last week as well as centers.  I could not be more pleased with how well we did.  We listened well and followed directions that were given.

Just Give

As of this week more than $10,000 has been contributed to our Just Give Campaign! We only have ONE WEEK LEFT! Our goal is $25,000. If we meet this goal we will not have ANY fundraisers for the rest of the year! No cookie dough sales, and no gift wrap sales! If we do NOT meet our goal then we will have to schedule fundraisers. Details about Just Give and a current budget to see WHERE the PTA money goes are available on our web site at www.blountpta.org. If you have questions, please feel free to email Jeannine Morton-Brown, VP of Fundraising, at fundraising@blountpta.org.

And the Winner of the Box Tops is........

ROOM 124!!!!!
We will be celebrating with Nancy's Italian Ice this week.  Thank you so much for sending in so many Box Tops!

I can't wait to see all of the About Me posters that are due tomorrow.  This is such a fun way to learn more about each other.

Thank you all for attending the cluster conferences last week.  Remember that they will take the place of us doing an open house in our room Tuesday night.  Instead, enjoy the Back to School Bash with your family.  It starts at 5:00.  I will include the information from the PTA at the bottom of this post as a reminder.

Your child brought home a printout Friday that has their password for you to get on Pearson Success if you would like to check their weekly Reading story grade.  I have added their beginning of the year baseline test as well.  Remember that the baseline test is just an assessment, it is not a grade.
Book orders came home Friday and they are due back by this Friday, Sept. 9th if you would like to order something.  This is completely optional.

If you have not sent in a check for $5.00 for Scholastic News and also Time for Kids please send it in as soon as possible.

Look for a Family Time sheet to come home with your child at the beginning of every week except for the end of the unit review week.  This is an overview of what will be covered with the reading story.  This is for you to keep at home and use with your child as you see fit.

Story this week:  Exploring Space with an Astronaut
Phonics: Long Vowels CVCe
Comprehension Skill: Main Idea and Details
Comprehension Strategy: Text Structure
Grammar:  Subjects in a sentence

In Math this week we will wrap up our chapter on addition.  Your child will have a review sheet as homework for Wednesday night and a Math test on Thursday.  Make sure your child is comfortable with everything on the review sheet in order to be prepared for the test Thursday.  Our next chapter will be on subtraction.

Your child will also bring home a Science Vocabulary study guide.  Please just go over these vocabulary words with your child a little bit each evening.  We have been enjoying our chapter on plants.  Ask your child about our greenhouse we planted Friday.

Please email me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Reminders from the Awesome PTA:

Spirit Nights

This year we have scheduled Spirit Nights at four area restaurants. Each spirit night will occur on the same night each month. PTA receives 10 to 15 percent of all sales. The schedule is as follows: Applebee's (1st Weds), Jason's Deli (2nd Tues), Burger King - Chantilly Pkwy (3rd Tues) and Nancy's Italian Ice (4th Weds) of every month throughout the school year.

Just Give
If it's successful we will not have any fundraisers for the rest of the year. We've asked for $65/student...which is a small price to pay for the great education the students are receiving at Blount Elementary. Detailed information may be found on the PTA web site at www.blountpta.org.

Back to School Bash, Open House and PTA Budget Approval

We have had a lot of feedback from parents about consolidating the number of nights we ask them to come up to school during the first month of school. So we have combined our usual Volunteer Round Up with Open House Night to achieve this goal. We are also going to host a Back to School Bash as a way to publicize the Fall Festival and get our parents excited. Here are some details:

-from 5-7 p.m. we will have two inflatables for the kids to enjoy

-from 5-8 p.m. we will have food vendors on hand where parents, teachers and staff can buy treats and dinner. So far we have Jim & Nicks, the Great American Cookie Co. and Nancy’s Italian Ice scheduled to come.

-at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria we will have a QUICK PTA Budget Approval Vote. It WILL NOT be an all-out PTA meeting, it will JUST be a budget vote. We are not going to do the attendance contest at this gathering like we did at last year’s PTA meetings because it is NOT a full meeting.

Fall Festival

October 20 (rain date October 27) at Thompson Park (adjacent from Blount Elementary) from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wristbands are being pre-sold for $10 for students and $1 for parents. The price at the gate will be $15 for students and $2 for adults. Also available is the Fall Festival T-Shirt - youth sizes in fall orange are $10 and adult sizes (S-XL) in chocolate brown are also $10. T-shirt orders MUST be turned into the office by close of business on Oct.1. We will not be able to accept an order after that time. Successful in 2nd Grade!

WOW! What an amazing and busy first week of 2nd Grade we have had!  We have determined what our expectations (rules) should be in Room 124, and we are doing a beautiful job of following them.  We are learning how our sweet community works and are adjusting so well.
In case you haven't already heard, our classroom tends to get extremely chilly at certain parts of our day.  You may want to send a small sweater or jacket for your child to keep in their cubby.  I know you find this hard to believe with the temperatures we have had outside, but trust me, it gets cold!
We will have our cluster conferences all this week.  I will send home a reminder to you Monday of the time and day you signed up for.  If you have a conflict just let me know and I can put you on another spot.  If you didn't sign up at Meet The Teacher Night, I will send you a note with available spots that are left.  These cluster conferences are going to take place instead of Open House for our class.  I would still encourage you to make sure and attend the PTA meeting that night.  We just won't meet in our classroom.
Your child has a binder that they will be bringing home every night.  It has a Reading Log in it that needs to be signed after their reading nightly.  Please only sign for that night.  Remember to check your child's binder nightly.  Any correspondence that I send home will be put in that binder.  Also, if you send me a note, I will answer it and put it back in your child's binder.  Any money that you send in can be put in the pouch at the front of their binder.
Juice and Snack may be purchased every Monday.  They are $2.50 for juice for the week and $2.50 for snack for the week.  I can only take correct change.
We head to lunch around 11:05 every day.  Please feel free to come and eat lunch with your child.  You  just sign in at the office and wait for us by the lunchroom door.  Your child will be delighted to see you!
Thanks so much for all of the Box Tops that have been sent in already.  The turn in day for them is this Wednesday.  Please send any you have by then.
I will be sending several Scholastic Book Orders home this Friday.  They will be due back by the next Friday, which is Sept. 9th.  You only need to write one check to Scholastic if you order from more than one order.  I will place the order that Friday.  This is entirely up to you.  The prices are incredible, and they have great books!
I am on the Dibels team this year so I will be out of the classroom for testing just on Tuesday of this week.  Your child will be with another 2nd grade teacher while I am testing so they will not miss their 2nd grade instruction.

SPELLING TEST!
I am very aware that spelling test are a completely new thing for us as 2nd graders.  We will spend a lot of time Monday learning how to take a spelling test.  Every Monday we will have a pre-test on our words.  Then the final test will be on Friday.  Your child has the spelling words for Unit 1 in their take home binder.  The words for this week are Week 1, which is Short Vowels CVC, CVCC, CCVC.
If your child makes a 100 on the pre-test on Monday, they will not have to do their Monday homework which is to write the words 3 times each.  However, they will do any spelling homework that they may have during the rest of the week.

HOMEWORK:
Your child will copy down their homework every Monday for the entire week.  If for some reason they forget it, remember that I will have it on the school notes site as a back up.

Don't forget that the About Me Posters are due on Sept. 6th.

Monday, Sept. 5th  Labor Day Holiday.

If you haven't sent in an empty paper towel roll for your child please do.  They will be used for a very important time capsule.

Reading Story:  Iris and Walter
Phonics:  Shorts Vowels
Comprehension Skill: Character and Setting
Comprehension Strategy: Predict

In Math this week we will begin Addition Strategies.

If you haven't turned in the check for $5.00 to Scholastic News and the check for $5.00 to Time for Kids please send those in as soon as you can.

I will not notify you when I update school notes with just the homework because I don't want you to get unnecessary emails.  I will only update you on schoolnotes if there is a message I need to get to you during the school week.  Just know that the homework will be put there every weekend for the following week.

Spectacular 2nd Graders!!!

I had such a fantastic time meeting every amazing 2nd Grader that is going ot be in Rooom 124 this year! Thank you for coming to Meet the Teacher night.

This blog will be updated every weekend as our main means of communication.  However, I will keep my schoolnotes page in order to post homework every week as well as any reminders I may need to send to you during our week.  Your child will write down their homework every Monday, but it will be posted on schoolnotes just in case it is forgotten.  I realize this is a big responsibility for 2nd graders so we will have it as a back up when needed.  Once I have all of your emails I will add them to the notification list for schoolnotes.  I will only notify you if there is information you need during the week.  I will not notify you when I update homework on there.  Hopefully you won't need it much for the homework.  The address is:  http://new.schoolnotes.com/.  I hope to keep you informed as much as possible through this blog, but there are times during the week I will need to remind you of something.

Please remember to send in the paperwork that you received on Meet the Teacher night.  Also, another packet of information is coming home this Monday that will need to be filled out as soon as possible.
Please feel free to email me at any time beth.culp@mps.k12.al.us.

We will be taking a baseline assessment test this week in reading.  Your child will not receive a grade on this test.  It is required from downtown as a beginning of the year assessment.  We will spend as much time as we need to on this test.

Also, if your child's transportation changes remember that I have to have something from you in writing.

We will have small cluster conferences in place of open house this year.  If you didn't sign up for a time to come in during Meet the Teacher night please email me or send me a note as to a good time for you.  I still encourage all of you to come to the PTA Back to School night, we just won't be meeting in our room that night.

Please send in a paper towel roll when you have an empty one.  We are going to be making some items to put in a time capsule this week so every child will need one of these.  It would be great if each child has one by this Friday so we can seal our items up and put them away.

I am looking forward to an amazing first week of 2nd Grade with your child!!
